Wow, the traffic in Wyoming is horrible!

Eventually my wife noticed that the scenery was going by very quickly and she asked me to slow down :) Has anyone else with a grey (any version) C7 noticed that on a bright sunny day with the right colored road the front of the car just reflects the road and sky and seems to disappear ? I've tried to get a picture of the effect but have never been successful. |
Are you on I80 ?
|
Watch out for the antelope crossing!

Just out of curiosity, how fast were you going?
|
What are the posted speed limits out there?
Weren't they briefly one of the "safe & prudent" speed limit states, or was that just Montana? |

Great picture. The last time we were up that way driving on Hwy 2 north of I-94 we only saw one farm truck for miles & miles. Absolutely beautiful country.
|
It'a a shame you can't "open her up"......
|
Reasonable and prudent was in Montana but Wyoming (I used to live there) had the 75 MPH limit but I have been told the interstates are now 80. Have not been back to see that. . yet. 2 lane roads would be 65 MPH. In the 70s and 80s during the winter it was not uncommon to travel I-90 from Sheridan 150 miles to Casper and only see 6 to 10 cars during the trip. The two lanes would not be that crowded most of the time.
I grew up thinking that if you could see several cars on the highway at one time the traffic was heavy. |
I'm headed up to Deadwood for a week here real soon for the Western Scenic Tour. Will be taking in all the sights around the Black Hills!

I'm from just across the river in NJ.
The changes once you get into the mid west are dramatic. From the east coast to Chicago I spent almost $200 in tolls and way too much time in traffic especially around Chicago. Once into Wisconsin, no more tolls and wide open roads all the way out to Wyoming. Even more dramatic when you consider that NJ has something like 22 people per square mile and wyoming has only 9 per square mile. And no tolls! |

I live in Montana where there are only 6.6 people per square mile and I love it that way. Plenty of room. Roads like the OP posted are abundant here and the "man" sightings are infrequent as a result. It's the main reason I got a Corvette. Only problem is it has to go into hibernation around Thanksgiving. Driving a car like this in Chicago ( lived there too) and most of the east coast would just be plain frustrating to me. The "no limit speed limit thing was here from 1995 to 1999. During those years if the weather was good you could do what ever you wanted. Just imagine that for a minute.

There's a lot to be said for living in "Fly-Over Country".
I just hope none of the Coasties ever stop to find out what it's like. |

Your stripes
Help is your car black with the silver strip with red outline can’t really see from picture. I have a black GS and want to add strip. Was thinking about that combo but can’t get a good idea or find a good picture. If that’s your combo can you post a walk around pic. Thank you |
Watch out for on-highway cattle and sheep drives... at least if you venture over into Idaho.
|
HP busted me on I80 eastbound west of Rawlins. 8mph over and a $100 fine. The speed limit varies from 75 to 80 and I had my cruise set at 83. Didn't see the change to 75 because of the trucks I was passing.
|
The joys of living out here. Our traffic jams are two cars at a stop sign. I live six miles east of the Wyoming line.

I would not be able to hold back on that road, clearly I'd be driving arrest me speeds, beautiful.

On a sadder note, Michigan...southeastern Michigan is the polar opposite. Literally every freeway is either closed entirely, has condensed lanes, or is under construction. I swear, they need to change our state flag to a picture of an orange construction traffic cone. I'll be driving this Labor Day weekend, but probably just around the Jefferson coast line, where the roads are peaceful and serene :steering: |

A lot of freeze/thaw cycles plus deferred maintenance set this up over decades in SE Michigan. On I-69 through Flint they currently are reconstructing the entire road right down to the roadbed. I'm told that the original concrete had still been there since the 1940s, with a lot of joint repair. (They would saw out the old joints and put in a few feet of new concrete, which meant that you had twice as many concrete joints.) The new stuff seems great, though still not done when I drove through a week or so ago. |
be careful running through WY... even at 65, the winds there ripped the bed cover fabric right off my truck 2 of the 3 times it's ever happened.... hence my current aluminum one. i have enjoyed a couple straight stretches out there in the car when i was stationed in Rapid City, though. real easy to spot critters & cops.

I drive through the western plains a fair bit and WY has been the worst for nuisance tickets. (5-10 over) TX, MT, CO, NM, AZ, not nearly as bad in my experience. Seems weird since the tickets have been in isolated areas with no traffic....which means MOST of WY. |

With a view like that in the OP, it would be very difficult to keep the pedal off the floor. :yesnod:

In fairness, Michigan did change many rural interstates to a 75 mph limit a year or so ago, which in my experience makes traffic move more smoothly--with less variation in speed from car to car. You can run up to 80 and even if you did get a ticket, less than 5 over is a fine but no points. Near Detroit traffic often moves faster, whatever the posted limit.
I'm taking so many detours and alternate routes, I wouldn't be surprised if I'm spelling my username in cursive just to get where I need to go  Give me those Wyoming roads any day of the week :) |

I live in S.E. Michigan and when traveling west, I avoid I-80 like the plague. Son lives north of Missoula, Montana and we found I-94 the best, exiting at Fargo,ND and come through the U.P., much more enjoyable.
|
When I head west, instead of I-80 in NE and WY, I use Hwy 2 in NE which becomes 20 in WY. Way less traffic and much more scenic.
|
Just an FYI , speeding in Montana at night could get you a careless / reckless driving ticket ( wildlife on the roads ) in addition to the speeding citation. We have a friend that had his insurance cancelled for the careless driving ticket.
