Eventually my wife noticed that the scenery was going by very quickly and she asked me to slow down :)

Has anyone else with a grey (any version) C7 noticed that on a bright sunny day with the right colored road the front of the car just reflects the road and sky and seems to disappear ? I've tried to get a picture of the effect but have never been successful.

Next time the wife complains about speed, hand her some binoculars and tell her to watch for cops.

Wemattson 08-27-2018 11:58 AM

Just out of curiosity, how fast were you going?

DWS44 08-27-2018 12:18 PM

What are the posted speed limits out there?

Weren't they briefly one of the "safe & prudent" speed limit states, or was that just Montana?

I had a grey Thunderbird that did precisely that. You could not readily tell where the road ended and the hood began. The slope of the hood was just right. It was a bit disconcerting at first until I got used to it.

IIRC, the posted limit was either 70 or 75 MPH.

I was traveling at a reasonable and prudent speed for the conditions and the type of vehicle I was driving ;)

Rebel Yell 08-27-2018 12:25 PM

Great picture. The last time we were up that way driving on Hwy 2 north of I-94 we only saw one farm truck for miles & miles. Absolutely beautiful country.

Steve Garrett 08-27-2018 02:23 PM

It'a a shame you can't "open her up"......

trapdoor 08-27-2018 06:03 PM

Reasonable and prudent was in Montana but Wyoming (I used to live there) had the 75 MPH limit but I have been told the interstates are now 80. Have not been back to see that. . yet. 2 lane roads would be 65 MPH. In the 70s and 80s during the winter it was not uncommon to travel I-90 from Sheridan 150 miles to Casper and only see 6 to 10 cars during the trip. The two lanes would not be that crowded most of the time.

I grew up thinking that if you could see several cars on the highway at one time the traffic was heavy.

bearphoto 08-27-2018 06:59 PM

I'm headed up to Deadwood for a week here real soon for the Western Scenic Tour. Will be taking in all the sights around the Black Hills!

I'm from just across the river in NJ.
The changes once you get into the mid west are dramatic.
From the east coast to Chicago I spent almost $200 in tolls and way too much time in traffic especially around Chicago.
Once into Wisconsin, no more tolls and wide open roads all the way out to Wyoming.
Even more dramatic when you consider that NJ has something like 22 people per square mile and wyoming has only 9 per square mile. And no tolls!

I live in Montana where there are only 6.6 people per square mile and I love it that way. Plenty of room. Roads like the OP posted are abundant here and the "man" sightings are infrequent as a result. It's the main reason I got a Corvette. Only problem is it has to go into hibernation around Thanksgiving. Driving a car like this in Chicago ( lived there too) and most of the east coast would just be plain frustrating to me. The "no limit speed limit thing was here from 1995 to 1999. During those years if the weather was good you could do what ever you wanted. Just imagine that for a minute.

I moved from CA -> AZ last March. Granted the registration is hefty. But I'm not convinced that that money is going in the same places as tolls. Besides, I lived in NJ for 24 years. The roads there suck big time, especially compared to the roads out West.

Don't you just love the view of the front end from the wheel of the C7. Nothing beats it. Unfortunately that probably will disappear with the mid engine C8.

Wife and I drove US191 from Arizona all the way up to Yellowstone park in our 2015 Z51 in June of 2016. It was an awesome trip with lots to see and many miles of wide open road to stretch the car out. We were fortunate that we didn't see any police on the entire trip.https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...7a79cbfa4c.jpg

Ticketed for 85 MPH. He could see we were on vacation going from Jackson Hole, WY to Steamboat Springs, CO. and didn't want to go through the hassle of writing me up and throwing me in the gray bar motel for a few hrs. Paid the fine through the mail and the points never hit my PA license so all ended well. There was literally no one on the highway except some Pronghorns and tumbleweed way of to the sides. Looked just like the OP's pic.

Your stripes

Watch out for on-highway cattle and sheep drives... at least if you venture over into Idaho.

HP busted me on I80 eastbound west of Rawlins. 8mph over and a $100 fine. The speed limit varies from 75 to 80 and I had my cruise set at 83. Didn't see the change to 75 because of the trucks I was passing.

Hate to break the bad news to you, but it isn't necessary to drive through Wyoming to get to Salina, KS from Deadwood, South Dakota.

And US385 doesn't go through Wyoming.

I don't blame you at all RR. Many (not all) bring their bad habits along with them, and can screw up an anvil with a claw hammer. (They have infested my area of the south). Up your way is some of the most beautiful land in America IMHO. If it didn't get so dad-gum cold up there I would move to Montana in New York minute to get away from them "coastie's". But I'm old now, and hate the cold weather. :)

BTW everyone, we were in the Badlands last year and saw some highways posted at 80 mph.

On a sadder note, Michigan...southeastern Michigan is the polar opposite. Literally every freeway is either closed entirely, has condensed lanes, or is under construction. I swear, they need to change our state flag to a picture of an orange construction traffic cone. I'll be driving this Labor Day weekend, but probably just around the Jefferson coast line, where the roads are peaceful and serene :steering:

In fairness, Michigan did change many rural interstates to a 75 mph limit a year or so ago, which in my experience makes traffic move more smoothly--with less variation in speed from car to car. You can run up to 80 and even if you did get a ticket, less than 5 over is a fine but no points. Near Detroit traffic often moves faster, whatever the posted limit.

"Orange Barrel Season" is a thing in Michigan. A lot of freeze/thaw cycles plus deferred maintenance set this up over decades in SE Michigan. On I-69 through Flint they currently are reconstructing the entire road right down to the roadbed. I'm told that the original concrete had still been there since the 1940s, with a lot of joint repair. (They would saw out the old joints and put in a few feet of new concrete, which meant that you had twice as many concrete joints.) The new stuff seems great, though still not done when I drove through a week or so ago.

_zebra 08-29-2018 04:18 AM

be careful running through WY... even at 65, the winds there ripped the bed cover fabric right off my truck 2 of the 3 times it's ever happened.... hence my current aluminum one. i have enjoyed a couple straight stretches out there in the car when i was stationed in Rapid City, though. real easy to spot critters & cops.

Cops hell!!! years ago, had to lay on the binders to a grinding stop because of cattle on the road to Big Horn mountain east of Cody Wy. As I slowly drove past a calf, it stared at me from the middle of the road. I could hear it say "Who the Hell are you on MY road? It's like worrying about armadillo's on I-37 (I think) San Antonio to Corpus Christi Tx at 125...Yikes.....Save the wave..

AK Goat 08-29-2018 06:22 PM

I drive through the western plains a fair bit and WY has been the worst for nuisance tickets. (5-10 over) TX, MT, CO, NM, AZ, not nearly as bad in my experience. Seems weird since the tickets have been in isolated areas with no traffic....which means MOST of WY.

As a retired LEO (many years ago) from a northern Detroit suburb, we used a standard of 11MPH over to warrant a traffic stop. In my many travels through the USA, if I was under 10mph over, I never encountered a traffic stop. Our thought process was that there was many fish in the pond, why catch a small one?

Understand that radar is harder to isolate a speeder with heavy traffic but much easier to ID a speeder in light traffic. Laser is a whole different story though.

That's true - this year seems to be worse than most though. For example, if I want to go from SCS to George Matick out in Redford, there are some weekends where I'm forced to just take side streets and semi-major roads due to I-94 being closed off at Connor on some weekends, I-96 now being condensed, and I-696 westbound being closed off entirely until November. If anyone's familiar with (Pure) Michigan, Saint Clair Shores to Redford Twp with everything open is about a 30 minute drive with light traffic.

I'm taking so many detours and alternate routes, I wouldn't be surprised if I'm spelling my username in cursive just to get where I need to go  Give me those Wyoming roads any day of the week :)

Hell in VA, each year you pay property tax and registration. Come every June I will have to pipe out around $800. Annual taxes and registration.

ricks327 09-02-2018 04:30 PM

I live in S.E. Michigan and when traveling west, I avoid I-80 like the plague. Son lives north of Missoula, Montana and we found I-94 the best, exiting at Fargo,ND and come through the U.P., much more enjoyable.

Dave80C3 09-03-2018 02:01 AM

When I head west, instead of I-80 in NE and WY, I use Hwy 2 in NE which becomes 20 in WY. Way less traffic and much more scenic.

MZeigler 09-03-2018 10:47 AM

Just an FYI , speeding in Montana at night could get you a careless / reckless driving ticket ( wildlife on the roads ) in addition to the speeding citation. We have a friend that had his insurance cancelled for the careless driving ticket.

Mike
