New A8 transmission fluid

Does anyone know the exact date of the new change over fluid at the factory for the A8 transmission?

Gearhead Jim 09-21-2018 05:35 PM

I'm not even sure they have changed the factory fill. The 2019 Owner Manual still shows the same GM product as before, though I've seen them be wrong year after year on other fluids. It's possible that the Mobil1 ATF is one of those "use it only if there is a problem with the GM stuff" things.

Thanks for asking the question, hoping someone will let us know...

Robert, check out this thread. I think Jim is right. As far as I understand the new fluid has friction modifiers to help with the shudder in the A8's. I sure hope it does. My A8 shudders like me on a cold winters morn. :)

Buddy at the plant confirmed with transmission guy it was at start of 2017 production. Have to take him at his word. Althiut I suspect even that guy is off a bit given the shudder issues with 17s.. my guess is around the time of the bulletin which I believe was December 2016. Meaning late 2017s had new fluid probably Jan 17 forward. Just a guess..

I hope that the new fluid is a real fix but I can't help but wonder if the new fluid just helps to mask the underlying issue by slowing or reducing the shudder to manageable levels. If it were me I would use this new fluid in combination with the the Range AFM disable device and hope it will last the life of the vehicle.

I'm going to have them change my trans fluid as precautionary exercise. IMO cheap insurance.

I had the new fluid changed on my 2017 vert and it did help a lot, but after 500 miles I had to have the TC replaced. now it does pretty good except the cold start up then it bangs from 1st to 2nd with a slight delay in between shifts. my car build date is sept 16

Cost of new fluid change if you pay for it yourself. I have not shudder but slight RPM flux that I am told is normal. I do use the Range device. Anyone know of cost?? Thanks

I just had my 2016 Stingray done on last Thursday. Charge was $299.95. $30.17 for filter, $133.20 for Mobile 1 LV ATF HP, $$136.58 for labor.

$300 is what my dealer quoted me to do the triple flush as well.
But after reading people are still have problems even after the flush, I just don't know what to think.

Was your vert showing symptoms before the flush?

Yes, my wife thought we had a flat tire on the car. Took it to the dealer the dealer did a reflash after a couple hundred miles it happen again. Went to a second dealer that dealer did a reflash aswell. The car did it again went back to the first dealer and that time the dealer did the triple flush. Then the car did great for a while then it came back. Another trip to the dealer then had the new TC put in with the new fluid now it shifts good except the early morning 1st to 2nd it bangs pretty hard sometimes like it don't know if it wants to shift. After its warmed up all is good. rarely in a parking lot going slow it will shift back and forth like it don't know what gear it wants. That could be my fault for coming off a 55mph to a real slow parking lot. That dont bother me like the morning shift, sometimes it's pretty bad.
I love this car and I think about selling it but then what do you buy. I think the dealer that I go to will take care of it to finish getting the bugs out. My service writer does a great job He even tells me if I find a TSB just give him the number and the car and it will get done. Thats like my front bumper is showing a small paint chip where it rubs on the fender he will get it fixed and I showed him a ware mark on my seat bolster so he said that he will order a new seat cover for it. Once you get a comfort level with a dealer you just have to have the faith that they will take care of your car. Not all dealers are the same

Ok, well that makes me feel better then. My '17 GS has no symptoms yet at 2400 miles. I just got the Range and plan to try it out today. Then I've got the flush scheduled for Thursday, along with an alignment after lowering on stock bolts.
Hoping the flush and Range will keep the TC happy for a few years :)

The fluid is the fix. Not a masking of symptoms. The problem is IF YOU HAD THE OLD FLUID and it passed a certain amount of wear onto the tcc then the shudder will appear at some point.

i know before my warranty is up I will end up with a TC replacement. But for the next 3 years it ain't bothering me until it has to.

Had the flush done under warranty last week and wont put enough miles on before winter to know if it did the trick. I'm sure by end of season next year the verdict will be in.
