What goes on in a differential

Kind of an interesting video from Gale Banks that I ran across on the Mopar B-Bodies forum. Apparently more goes into configuring a differential housing and cover than I knew.

Thank you for sharing this.

Excellent video from Mr Banks. I really like the plastic cover. Diff's are in fact a large gear pump. The 63-79 vette housing was squared off so it would be interesting to see a vette diff with plastic cover. The action is the same though. While the vette has no side tubes the axle bearings are lubed.
Here is a vette housing with the parts removed and you can clearly see the upper oil passage and the return on the lower end.

A clear cover would be of little use. Once things get spinning the fluid is slung everywhere obstructing view.

Thanks - good photo. Those of us who haven't ventured into a differential tear down have probably never seen or were aware of that passage feature.

I was there, with Gary's much appreciated long distance support

Some of those videos are enlightening, I am often asked why the early self-adjusting brakes don't "over adjust" themselves - I respond with this, there are some superb videos on rebuilding Muncies and trailing arms too:
