Number on key fob is missing
 

How can I determine key fob number when it is missing from the case?
Other key fob is lost.
2008 C6.

I'm trying to figure out why you need to number it considering it's the only key fob you have. Call it #1 or #2 or #3472!

This is a fob for a C6 and this thread should be moved to C6 general.

That said, I'm confused about what you are asking. Are you saying that the number is not visible on the case? Did someone file it off? On the old-style fob the number is on the back, the new is on the bottom, but at this point, I wouldn't be too sure that it is correct given that the car is a decade old. Either way, numbering is dependent on the order in which it was programmed. There is no difference in the fob itself. At this point it could just as easily be 3 or 4.

Are you asking because you want to order a replacement (or additional fob)? If so, then it doesn't matter what the number on the fob is.

I have no numbers on my FOB's.

On my '16 Z there are TINY #s inside the recess when you remove the Key from FOB. I have a 1 & a 4. Don't know if these #s have anything to do with anything. As others have said, just program one key as Saved Memory 1/ other as 2. I just looked at mine other day cause I was checking the stored one to make sure it still worked (going on a trip/so it's the spare) so I checked #s to keep them from being mixed up on my memory settings. Yes, I should program both to same Memory setting since I'm only driver.:D

And no, the numbers printed on the C7 key base have nothing to do with anything.

Because of your post and the history on key numbers, I just checked the key numbers for my 2017 Grand Sport! They are still numbered!

History and Number Meaning!
I got my 2014 C7 in October 2013. Took a few months for a poster to figure out what the numbers "in the removable key" meant! It was really funny but some folks swore they were numbered and there's were correct and some of us just didn't know where to look or what we were talking about!

My Grand Sport "removable keys" are both numbered with a "2" in the recess, harder to see than my 2014. What the poster figured out is those were probably numbers in a two cavity forging or casting die used to make the blanks before the key was cut! That would account for some of us saying we had two 1's, some two 2's and some 1 and 2! But in fact, and I remember the posts as some with a 1 & 2 said theirs were not correct. Recall someone saying correctly, swap keys in the FOBs! :lol: Would have been a stupid place to put a number as that can be done!

From a probability viewpoint, 25% of us have two 1's, 25% two 2's and 50% have a 1 and a 2. However of that 50% only half randomly are correct! Fact is whichever is programed first as 1 stays 1 and the other becomes 2! Those posts were funny until it was figured out. All the GM folks said who were monitoring the Forum much more at the time was, "Their sources said the FOB's are not numbered!"

PS: From post #8 looks like it may now be a 4 cavity die or madrob2020 did not get a magnifier as I did to see the number clearly :lol: Think that is 4! or perhaps half that = 12 unique combos.

From the factory, the numbers on the C6 fob did mean something, and I don't ever recall a new owner having much confusion as to personalizing settings distinguishing between driver one and two (unlike the C7 which was a great deal of the responses so far and a lot of confusion early in the generational run).

However for owners who aren't the original owners, the printed numbers may or may not mean much at this point, and if your dealer is programming the fobs, it is helpful to know which fob is programmed first.

Did not think mine did as it's very small and in a recess in the manual key. Different location that my 2014. It's a small recess and almost need a magnifying glass to see it! I have two 2's. If that #4 is correct than randomly you can have a:
1&1, 1&2, 1&3, 1&4
2&1, 2&2, 2&3, 2&4
3&1, 3&2, 3&3, 3&4
4&1, 4&2, 4&3, 4&4
Just checking for the 12 possibilities! :lol:

But it has nothing to do with which FOB is 1 & 2!

Factory fobs have a number, since they must be programmed/synced to the car and match the "DRIVER" number on the DIC, so the final customer can define the difference. I'm guessing they have a device that plugs in the OBD port that shortcuts the long procedure, because that method wouldn't work at a volume of 18-20 cars per hour.

On further inspection one of my FOBs has a 3 on it but the one I use doesn't have a number.

Gosh, if "0" is included and someone has a 4 that is 5 unique cavities in the mold or die for the removable key (before it's cut!) Then ha is 5 factorial/2 = 5!/2 = 60 unique combinations! :lol:

Again if that is what they reflect, i.e. mold/die cavities it still has nothing to do with FOB 1 or 2!

In the dic when you first get in or start the car you should be able to tell what # the fob is unless someone has programmed their own personal message in.
