CS130 to High Amp Output CS144 - 86 vette
I'm looking to put a 250 amp alternator, this http://www.tuffstuffperformance.com/...-7290nf6g.html on as a replacement for my stock alternator on my 86 vette, I've read of people doing it and it being relatively simple, but those were all with lower amp CS144's and I want to be sure I'm not going to burn my car down or anything, I'm planning on putting in a pretty taxing audio system that would end up using just about 250 amps and I need to know if this would work, would I need new wiring for the alternator or can I use the stock, and if I'm an idiot for even trying this? Iirc it's a pretty drop and go swap. That being said if you're going to draw that kind of power the main feed to the battery is somewhat meh. If you're familiar with the big three, I'd probably do that. Helping out grounds and the feed and all... |

No problem, I am sure others will chime in as well. The only other thing you might have to worry about is the actual plug on the top of the alternator... IIRC they are the same but the did change over the years. Again, not a big deal...

You will likely need to increase the size of the wire and put in a larger fusible link as explained here.

Research "the big 3" upgrade.
You'll want to increase the battery charge wire, battery to chassis ground, and engine block to chassis ground size. I ran 0 gauge wire in my old car with a 3200w Class D amp that could pull up to 200 amps at once. |
