Is that a rearview camera?

Is that a shroud over a rearview camera in the upper middle of the facia?

That would be my best guess..

I still think it will be a clear window on final version..

Rear engine display would be a key selling point and I cant see them blocking it.

My bet is that is all going to be storage. With a rear view camera setup you do not actually need to see out if the window.

Yes it's a rear view camera.

No, even with a camera a conventional mirror is still required by law, so the rear window will be transparent on the final cars, and is probably just heavily tinted here.

Fun fact. It's the easiest way to distinguish the convertibles from the coupes. That example is the coupe. The convertible is mounted a little higher in a nub on the roof.

Here is a convertible. Spot the difference.

It’s a mirror camera https://www.wired.com/2016/11/cadill...mirror-camera/

reason they decided to go into this direction the rear trunk sits high and you won’t be able to see out the back of the car.. Camera mirror is legal in USA.

JerriVette 10-17-2018 09:59 PM

Not a huge fan of rear view cameras replacing rearview mirrors..

over time we will all get used to them but as of right now that rear view camera replacement of the mirror even temporarily is just not comfortable...

and it is true...the law still requires rearview mirrors.

gm s solution is pretty neat

gm is a leader in technical advances.

With the normal mirror one will see just as well as many other mid-engined cars. ie legal but not great. The proportions of the C8 don't look any different to many other cars out there with no added tech. The virtual mirror is at least theoretically better in this situation. It certainly provides an unobstructed view.

Looks photoshopped.

I'd take one of those mirrors in a heartbeat. I've got this little mailbox view out the back of my car thanks to the already small back window and the stage 2 spoiler I added. I might try to retrofit one once used parts come down in price a little more.

Jerri,
Have you seen the new GM rearview camera mirrors? An associate at work has a new Escalade with the rear camera/mirror. You can toggle between mirror and camera - stationary or in motion. The image fills the entire mirror.

The resolution and expanded unimpeded view are amazing. The depth perception is great. Once you use it, it is no question this is the future.

They use the camera view 100% of the time - except when they need to stare down a kid in the back.

uneedthis2 10-18-2018 07:13 PM

We've got the 2019 Sierra Denali and it's got the mirror that when you flip the switch on the bottom, it becomes a camera.
I love the feature, the wife doesn't.
It's odd when you don't have to adjust the mirror when you're wife adjusts it to her driving position, but AWESOME at the same time.
I will say that when you're using the mirror as a camera for a long period of time, the body of the mirror gets really warm, odd I know.
I do wish they had positioned it a bit different. You can't see the edge of the tailgate, so it always looks like you're about to get rear ended.

themonk 10-18-2018 10:13 PM

no, the rear view camera as mandated has to see below the rear bumper, that's the whole point of a rear view camera.

Isn’t that a back up camera rather than a rear view camera?

tomlink 10-18-2018 10:59 PM

You’re correct. If you look at the rear shots of the ME, you can see both a high-mounted rear view cam and a license area mounted back up cam.

ACCHRM 10-19-2018 01:12 AM

100% sure it's going to be a second camera that shows in your rear view mirror from the flick of a switch and turns your mirror into a screen. 2019 Camaro, 2018 Traverse and 2018 Bolt EV have it already, pretty cool tech.

yeah, I guess. :confused2:

CONMAX 10-19-2018 09:54 PM

tom is right. most rear view mirrors reflect at about waist height from 5' back. that's one of the benefits of the camera. you can see a 2' tall infant behind you. wish my Z06 had front camera, might have saved my CF splitter.

No, that's the needle gun for Porsche 918 tailgaters.

I suppose I should have said rearview mirror camera which would be in addition to the backup camera.

Of course I know nothing, it is just my guess. Storage is of serious importance to many corvette buyers and this is one way to solve it.

I was responding to this in your post

Which is incorrect. You still need to be able to see out the window when mirror is in conventional mode.
