62 rear axle stubborn wheel stud removal

Hello All,
I broke a rear axle wheel stud. This stubborn stud will not remove, I have tried penetrating oil and hitting it with a hammer (No Luck) I tried heating it up and hitting it with a hammer(still no luck). Do I need to pull the axle and have it pressed off? Never had one so stubborn.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Jerry

Yes

Put the hammer down and pull the axle for the press!

Few blips with an air chisel should knock it out.

Hitting a rear axle bearing sideways is never a good thing. They are not made for side load.

AND, believe it or not, you can bend that flange....

I agree with the guys above, never use a hammer to drive out studs, use an air hammer instead. Or, you can do like I am, and replace the whole axle with new ones that have screw in studs.

:iagree: Properly support the flange and use a press to remove AND install the new studs. That's the only way to do it correctly.

Thank You All, I guess I'll be pulling the axle, might as well change out both seals while I have it apart

if you've whaled on it with a big hammer, I suggest you check the trueness with a dial indicator before pulling the axle…. :willy:

Very, very good points. 1. Verify it's still true while it is still in the car. 2. If it is still true, remove and use a press to do the job properly. Studs should really never be done on-car for the reasons already stated. As an emergency repair for a beater, sure. But a classic with original parts? Nah.....

Could someone tack welded the head of the stud to the flange to prevent it from spinning?

Studs are splined and pressed into the flange so they will not spin.

Yup, pulled the axle and the air chisel did the job, replaced the stud, put the axle back in all good to go
