Fuel Gauge is intermittent

The gas gauge has taken to working sometimes, sometimes not?

I assume it is the tank float, and will take a peak down there..

Gotta say I am a little shaky about sticking anything into a partially filled tank and yanking an electrical device reading resistance... ?

Any one have any thoughts on the subject or experience??

Thanks

DISCONNECT THE BATT (what year vette?)

TJM 11-06-2018 02:54 PM

1989.. or maybe leave the key off!

It is intermittent, so it would be nice to see some action... as long as not explosive?!

Hoping for some wisdom, but likely going to pull it out, not that big a deal. 90% convinced it is the sending unit

I can rationalize replacing the unit, it still has the original pump and is probably wanting to rest?

May help:

Thank You Sir,

We had a C4 track car and changed pumps more than I care to say.. Never had this sort of problem?

went through three, because of capacity... I ended up with a monstrous pump 450lph for Ethanol fuel!!

Think I have a new 255LPH somewhere????/

To check the sender you should completely remove the sending unit. On the bench you can check the resistance with the float in various levels with a DVM.
Don't be surprised to find the resistance coil corroded.

You have more knowledge and experience with this subject, so I will crawl back into my hole.

Just having the key off is never as safe as disconnecting the battery when working on fuel related issues.
The intermittent issue is one that has been previously discussed in this forum and provided solutions that I used to correct the problem on my 92. Cleaning the coil for the sending unit worked for a while but getting a new sending unit provided a permanent solution. If I can find the link to the previous post that helped me I will repost the link.
