Battery light

Bone stock 81. Battery measures 11.7 when car is off. Car starts right up. Battery/volt light comes on immediately volt meager on battery terminals reads 14.7-15.3. Gage is as pictured below. Thinking that the alternator is over charging but wanted to get a second opinion before I start to swap out parts. Thanks in advance for any input.

Yes, to me it looks like it is overcharging a bit. What did you change before this happened or did it just boom, start doing it?

I'm thinking you have an alternator problem. There is a diode in the alternator that should shut off that light when it's charging. That, plus the voltage is a bit high.

no changes. Just started happening the other day. Looks like I’ll swap the alternator

It's simple to rebuild it, swhat I did with mine when it quit charging the battery. Kits are under $20 and even if you just replace the diode, which would likely fix the problem, I think it's quite a $ savings.

Bob, take it to Jackson's Auto Electric, 100 Ellis Blvd (near the old Ragazzi's) they can test it for you or rebuild it if necessary. I've been using them for years and always had great service from them.

Hey Gusto,

haven't seen you in a bit. I wound up replacing with a new one but kept the original alternator to have it rebuilt. I agree Jackson Electric is the best in Jacksonville and they will get the original to rebuild. As of now all is good lights out and the 81 is back on the road for the next parade.

thanks all for the replies!!
