Vintage custom paint

YES..I am into looking at and appreciating the old nostalgic custom paint jobs from back in the day. Idea like using the soot from the acetylene torch and then clearing over it to the endless stripe design like above to a spraying over lace to give an effect. Flames, scallops, huge metal flake and the candy paints...They are nice to look at and see what the painter was trying to accomplish. Some that I have seen I feel the painter did not do so well in getting the colors to work together...but heck....that be just what they wanted...colors clashing.

Always enjoy the nostalgia items. Much better than some of the new stuff with clear coating rust and calling it patina.

i started custom painting at about 8 i guess . it's all i ever wanted to do. my pop used to wonder where it came from :)

Seems like the trends have changed over the years. You rarely see a true custom painted Vette anymore, unless it’s a survivor from that late 70s disco era. At that time the outlandish color combinations and design techniques were king. Just like DUB pointed out the crazier the colors the better. I have always been fascinated by these custom paints, but in the back of my mind wondering why someone would do that to such a cool car. These guys had balls, and didn’t care what others thought. Another truly stunning 70's custom. This is one of my favorites. Wondering how many hours would be involved in a paint project like this.? Seems like once this is done to the car, it transcends to a work of art and is no longer viable transportation.

Check out some of the lowrider cars. I look at it as an updated version of the 70s custom paint. Bright metallics, lots of flowing graphics. The old custom paints , like the lowrider stuff, isn't my cup of tea, but, I appreciate the artistry and workmanship that goes into those paint jobs. I visited Petersen auto museum in LA earlier this year and they had a lowrider display. Some very impressive cars with great paint.

yeah. its the same as most traditional lowrider paintjobs.
Usually a metal flake base silver. And then they tape up different patterns and use candy paint colors in multiple layers to get a one off effect. Ive been thinking of getting an extra set of t tops and doing this to swap different looks. |
