1966 Front Speaker Replacement
I know there are other threads on this subject but the ones I found were pretty old. Wondering if there is any new info out there...
My 66 has aftermarket A/C and already has a custom autosound speaker in the front from the previous owner. Speaker is blown. Question one, can you replace the speaker without yanking the cluster? Question two, since the custom autosound only lasted 4 years, what is a better quality replacement. Thanks! |

www.turnswitch.com 1-877-780-2861. You'll be glad you did. I had to remove the radio to put it in. If someone has been in "there" and changed out the original, he has the correct pigtail to make it a clean install. Make sure it is attached to the radio properly. Ron B.

Removing the cluster won't be much help don't do that. Remove the glove box and the side panels at the radio, you may have to take your ducting out for the aftermarket AC.
Wait till Frankie the Fink responds to this, he has some good information on the speaker to use. |
Also I'd check carefully to make sure your speaker is actually blown. With Custom Autosound radios and speakers it's hard to tell because both are not very good quality sound.

Nope not stock radio, I have the original rebuilt with Aurora innards….4 ohm.

The Electo-Tech speaker with the impedance matching transformer is for original cars....
You still can't beat the Custom Autosound 140W stereo 6x9 with dual voice coils... No - don't take the cluster out (gads!) removing the glovebox liner and clock helps though... Speaker sound is about the size of the cone and magnet mass - those little dual "glued to a board" 4-inchers will never sound as good as the Custom Autosound... |

While I have the glove box out and radio side panels out, I plan on installing a "Custom Autosound 3006 DVC 6" x 9" 140W Dual Voice Coil Dash Speaker". Will it work with an original radio, if my radio even works.
Thanks, Dex. |

NO ! First of all that speaker is for aftermarket stereo units, second you might well blow your original radio's output transistor without the impedance matching transformer original speakers use... You want the Electro-Tech speaker for an original radio.
http://www.corvetteamerica.com/part/...earnmoreid=434 I found the Electro-Tech at turnswitch.com. |

I have been thru this several times. I also have the duel voice coil speaker from Gary Tayman and aftermarket AC. Definitely install it by removing the glove box. I did not have to remove any duct wok. Just be very careful as the magnet will pull towards the Z bar and when you pull it away you can rip the speaker cone with the studs on the grill. ( don't ask me how I know )
Here is a pic of mine. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...71c9d72fff.jpg |

Where did you buy that one from?

I found that removing just the side panels and the radio made it much easier to replace the speaker in my 63.....
