58 Test Drive gone bad
A guy who grew up next door to me called to talk about C1's (he saw mine on Facebook) as he was going to hopefully buy a '58. A few days later, he posted on Facebook that his test drive didn't go well. Seems that the right front suspension broke and into a big ditch he, the salesman and the Vette went. I copied some photos he posted so I will try to upload them. Sure looked pretty from the outside.

What a shame, but, 'stuff' happens. My second ride in my new-to-me '64 Coupe, when I pressed the brake, the peddle went to the floor, and I rolled through a stop sign. Luckily I was only going 5 mph, and the sign was in a strip mall, so, no real likelihood of smashing into another vehicle. Turns out, a brake hose came off. What a way to begin ownership of a new toy. :eek:

When I picked up my brand new 77 from the dealer, 10 miles down the road I stepped on the brake and couldn’t stop. Apparently the brake pedal pivit pin had fallen out. Luckily I was able to turn into a side street. Back to the dealer. 2 days later I stepped on the clutch pedal and the same disconnect happened. Guess it was a bad assembly day. Dan |
I was sure hoping that when I clicked on this thread I wouldn’t see Corvette carnage and I would cringe over my morning coffee. Fortunately, it looks like the body wasn’t damaged at all. I hope we get a follow up on what broke. Did he provide any details on modifications like a aftermarket front subframe or original stock front suspension? From the pictures it looks to be lowered front and rear, so perhaps a Jim Meyer subframe? |
He didn't provide any real details. He is really not a car guy - just has the means now and wanted a 58.I posted a link to the ProTeam site because I believe the '58 listed is the car. It was a restomod and there are some details there.

I might have set a bad kingpin but with a restomod who knows what's under there ?

If the car has original suspension, i would posit either one of the lower control arm cross shafts broke (or came loose), or the spindle support broke. Doug |
I doubt it was the Jim Meyer setup because the ad would have probably stated that, or at least rack and pinion. It only touted disk brakes.

My guess is that an aftermarket 'upgraded' part failed. The stock primitive front suspensions on these cars are pretty stout.
