My first post and question
 

Hello everyone and thank you for having me in your community! I'm a perspective 1st time Corvette buyer and I've been interested in owning a C4. I found a car I want and would like opinions on whether this is a good buy or not.

1995 Corvette $8500
I have this nice vette for sale or trade. I have done a lot of work on the vehicle to get it in really good running condition. Contact for details. Lots of new mechanical parts.

Trade interest are mainly 4 door 4x4 trucks, or Jeep Wrangler, but I will be glad to consider any offers just shoot me a text.

Current cons:
Rip in the drivers seat. Shown in pic.
Needing head light motor. They will open but sometimes gets hung up.
Other than those things, this car is solid!

With the miles, but add the fact that it's a 6 speed (with the stronger rear), and the seat condition, without seeing it in person....I'd say 7000 to 7500ish.

Normally I'm the guy who says cars are reasonably priced. In this case, I agree with the above. 8500 seems like it's a bit high. If it didnt have the seat issue, I'd probably feel a bit differently. I think that 7500 would be a fair price if the car is in good shape in person.

The other thing worth noting is it has c6 wheels on it currently. I'd want to know a little more about them, size wise and tire condition wise, as tires for those are easily a grand, quite a bit more than for stock c4 wheels.

The text message says the clutch was replaced with aftermarket parts. If not done right those can cause a lot of rattles. Make sure you get a good test drive in on this before you make any deals.

Its 25 years old. If things havent been replaced previously, they go bad from being worn out.

the big thing people complain about is the optispark, but it's more of a boogeyman than real common issue. It is located under the water pump, so if you dont replace that you can inundate the opti eith leaking coolant. The water pump is regular upkeep IMO though. A large part of issue people think are the optispark are actually the icm, it's a small easily replaced box bolted to the heads.

The security system (VATS) can fail, but that happens on new cars too. If the heat doesnt work, the heater core is a real pain to replace. Spark plugs are not easy, spark plug wires are probably the hardest job I've had on the car (and I did an opti and a heater core).

Some people have issues with the pop up headlights. They use a plastic gear designed to strip instead of burning out your motor, many people replace these with bronze gears that wont strip. The lexan tops can craze andcrack, and both solid and lexan tops can separate, but are easily to reglue. Weatherstrippong goes bad... all this stuff is normal old car stuff.

If you're mechanically inclined, but not necessarilyknowleegeable, the c4 ia super easy to work on, and is a great learning tool.

Few things, first you want to check under that dash carpet cover, probably there to cover up problems. Ask him if rear main seal was done while doing clutch. I run C6 rims on my '96, 19 out back 18 front, looks like he did the same. Looks like he has wheel adapters installed, make sure they are proper adapters and not just spacers with longer lugs. I like the bigger rims but some people don't, you will feel every pebble, but they do seem to handle better IMO. Lastly, I wouldn't pay more than $6K for that car.

Lift up the dash pad, if its cracked up under there, I would say 7k at most

$6000-$6500 range is exactly what I was thinking.

How many other C4's have you looked at and driven? My personal thought on buying a Corvette Like others here on the CF) is that you should find the best car that you can for the money you want to spend. For this car, I would avoid it because of the high mileage and the damage to the driver seat. Fixing the seat (or both seats) can easily run up to or even over $1000. Check the tires to make sure they are not older than 5-7 years. Brakes? good shape, lots of pad material left and good rotors too. Check the suspension components for worn out bushings or old worn out shocks.

Even if you get the car for around $6K, it could be that it would cost you another $2K or more to get it good condition. My .02 cents worth!!:cheers:

I've looked at a few C4's, primarily in GA. I was looking for a late C4 (95 or 96... preferably a 96 with an LT4), 6-speed manual, convertible or Targa top and if possible an aqua metallic blue exterior.

Welcome to the world of C5. A 95 or a 96 are great cars but if this is going to be your first corvette then I have an important piece of advice for you. Before you buy .... drive at least a half dozen of these cars (there are lots of them for sale) so that you can begin to get a sense of what a well maintained one "feels" like vs. a poorly maintained one. Then, when you find one that you like..... such as this one .... taking it for a ride will tall you a lot!

Why? because how this car was maintained over the past 25 years is going to play a BIG part in how much time and $$$ you're going to have to put into the car to get it running reliably.

Cannot really give you an opinion on this car without taking it for a drive.

Check what eBay and your KBB values are for your area. I personally won't pay you so much if I were in the market for a C4. It better be way better than that one.

Good luck with your search! We are in NW Georgia and just bought a '95 with less than 39000 miles. There have been a few issues since we got it. We redid the headlight motors, and did the oil change. Had the tranny system and coolant system flushed. Found a couple of things that were expected, but now we have a problem with the coolant disappearing. Hopefully it isn't a big problem. This C4 forum is priceless! Full of great advise and vast knowledge! I also asked them questions before we bought this car.
