Differences washing ZR1 and Z06

I washed and detailed the ‘16 Z06 and ‘19 ZR1 back-to-back today.

Differences noted:

1) ZR1 wheel faces are much easier to wash. Full stop. Way easier!
2) Can’t use mitt on wheel barrels on ZR1. Not even the rears. Had to use Micro fiber towel. The CCB rotors are just too big to get a mitt in there.
3) Carbon ceramic brakes are much cleaner. I did not have to rinse the wheel face mitt or barrel towel between wheels on ZR1. I had to rinse for each wheel on Z06 (Iron brakes).
4) No need to clean rust off rotors post wash on ZR1

5a) ZR1 front fender side vents are much easier to wash. Z06 has way more detailed areas in side vents.
5b) Same for front grill on ZR1. Much easier.

6) I reserve a mitt for upper and lower surfaces on Z06 (and Camaro). With all the carbon fiber down low, the ZR1 gets upper surface mitt on all areas.

7) Z06 gets small rocks lodged into gap between spoiler and rear deck. This is not an issue on ZR1. I use a dental pick to get them out of the Z06 gap.

8) New paint plant on ‘19s is nice. That said, ‘16 Z06 paint is not noticably different after decontamination and proper coating.

9) Drying the ZR1 is easier with my Stihl leaf blower (filter on intake). The surfaces are simpler and the carbon fiber is slicker than carbon flash paint on Z06.

The ZR1 is an easier car to wash. However for the money, the ZR1 should really come decontamined (iron partcles removed and clayed) and finally ceramic coated from the factory. Ceramic coating makes it so much easier to wash and dry a properly prepared surface. Right now the Z06 surface runs circles around the ZR1. In the next few days I will prep and ceramic coat the ZR1. This is probably a 6 hour job. After that I’m thinking the paint cleaning will be a push. ZR1 will win overall contest (and time) because of the wheels.

Other observations:

a) ZR1 needs carbon fiber mirrors, rear brake inlets and tail light bezels (Ben @ weaponX are you listening?).
b) Wondering why no factory spats on ZR1.
c) ZR1 needs mud flaps. Carbon Fiber? I see ACS sells them (non CF), but the price ...
d) Would like to see stripe kit for ZR1. Carbon flash stripes really finish the shark grey Z06. Watkins Glen grey ZR1 would be enhanced as well.

What is "paint decontamination"?

Removal of any contaminants from the painted surfaces. Including, but not limited to, rail dust, acid rain spots, bugs, tar, etc. Really anything that is not removed with basic washing.

punky 12-24-2018 08:54 AM

I guess I'm not as much of a waxer as I thought I was.

^^^ This.

Surface decontamination is a pre-requisite before sealants, ceramic coatings or wraping with xpel, etc.

The modern mitts/sponges that replace clay bars also do a great job decontaminating the windows with proper lubrication. I did this before sealing the glass on the Z06 and Camaro. It’s amazing how clear the glass is and how easy it cleans up.

BTW this “detailing disease” is a direct result of maintaing a black car (Camaro). You are all now properly warned. Haha.

Someone really started a thread on the differences between washing a z06 vs zr1, lol? This is absolutely priceless!

I have never "decontaminated", clay barred, ceramic coated, or used any other costly, fancy schmancy technique. Car soap wash with a rag followed by a quick Adams Detail Spray and my rides look phenomenal and get compliments everywhere I go. Seems like some of us have let our OCD rule when it comes to this stuff. Ridiculous, "decontaminate", get real.

Adam’s sells great detail spray. I use it.

Now visit his web site and check out all the products he sells to decontaminate painted surfaces. He has videos as well. Really go check it out. I’ll wait.

I gor a better idea, you keep on "decontaminating" and I'll drive.

Nice notes. I had my paint cleaned up and Xpel'ed the car the first week I had it. I still need to get the wrap ceramic coated though, but did my wheels.

a: ALREADY DONE!
CF mirrors are in-bound to me to test fit now, but it's all CAD designed so with as epic as the rest of the parts have fit, I have zero concerns (below)
CF quarter vents - I have one set in stock and more will be here end of Jan (below)
CF tail light bezels - confirmed fitment and ready to rock! More will be here end of Jan as well! (below on my car)

b: spats were only used on the Z06 because the bumpers weren't true on the forward side. the spats were made to allow GM to reuse the Stingray front bumper, which I always thought was odd.

c: I went with body color splash guards, adds a little "width" to the look of it since it's paint IMO

d: I think with the center cowl, a solid single stripe would look great if done right

Claying a car is about as far from "fancy schmancy" as you can get. Initial purchase is less than $15, and may add 15-20mins to a typical wash. A detailer wouldn't touch a car....any car, without doing this step first. Hardly, "ridiculous."

FYI, getting passive over something just because you previously knew nothing about it, doesn't make you look like a cool-guy.

Merry Christmas!

You hate these cars, they're ugly, everyone who buys one at MSRP is dumb, and this poor guy who dares to share his passion for maintaining his car is a toad. What gives? Were you beaten as a child? No doubt, you're going to get a lump of coal tomorrow.

Had a detail shop do paint correction and coated with Modesta glass coating. Makes washing the car easy since the color pops with just a wash. I did pick up one of the air force blasters to dry the car.

Which ones did you buy then paint? ACS?

I was thinking that as well. This car already has the Jake decal though. I was thinking a single center stripe near the front or two thinner stripes on the hood adjacent to the supercharger. Other option is to skip the stripes on the hood area and just go for the hash marks over the front wheels like the collector's edition from '17. Rear gets same treatment as regular corvettes. With the Watkins Glen Gray, I think the stripe color is blue to pick-up the ZR1 emblems, the blue in the paint and the blue in the calipers.

Will this piece have CF "plugs" to cover up the mounting points for the wing if the wing is not installed? This would make a great "just driving around a freeway speeds and below" spoiler setup.

I think these pieces along with the rear brake duct/inlet pieces will be my configuration.

Back when I bought my '12 2LT triple black Camaro a a daily driver, I noticed I had swirls and they were getting worse. As I now know, it was my tools and technique. I did research and spoke with detailers. I now know how to properly take care of the surfaces. Not only do they look so much better, maintenance is super easy as almost nothing sticks.

This is that same black Camaro today.

As you're well aware mechanical and chemical decontamination is very real and a necessary step if you are going to apply a ceramic coat or even wax or apply sealant for that matter. It is a big reason show cars look so much better than daily drivers. Some people just will never learn from others who know better. Life often passes these people by.

Amazing how some of us have made it through life without "decontaminating" our cars.
