What We Know About the C8 Corvette

Much of what we know about the C8 Corvette we've known for more than 6 months. So, instead of itemizing everything anew I'll start with a recap of what I published on July 16, 2018.

These photos are spy photos of C8 Corvette mules and a speculative artist's rendering. Keep in mind that "mules" are engineering platforms and the body is not necessarily a production body. Also note the camouflage isn't just covering body contours, the camo dramatically alters the shape of the car. The lights, valance panels, rockers, exhaust tips and especially the wheels will likely have no relationship to the production C8. What the actual C8 Corvette will look like is purely speculation.

One thing for sure, the C8 Corvette is the most hotly anticipated new Corvette since the C4.

1. The 8th generation Corvette will be Mid-Engine.
2. Production will begin in 2019.
3. The C8 will likely be a 2020 model.
4. There will be several C8 versions offered.
5. The top C8 will likely be an all wheel drive hybrid.
6. C7 & C8 Corvettes will be built side by side.
7. C7 production will continue for at least two more years.
8. A Mid-Engine Cadillac will likely share the C8 platform.
9. The most powerful C8 will likely have in excess of 1,000HP!
10. The small block Chevrolet push-rod V8 will power the C8.
11. The C8 will continue to be a performance bargain.
12. The C8 will likely be named "Zora" for GM's former director of performance cars and long time mid-engine Corvette advocate Zora Arkus-Duntov.

It is rumored the all new Mid-Engine C8 Corvette will make its debut at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. - John Berg (July 18, 2018)

What we know about the C8 as of January 2019

C7 production now looks like it will end in 2019. While I have heard from several sources that the C7 and C8 would be built side-by-side I never got confirmation of simultaneous "full-scale" production. Pre-production C8's are being built now along side the C7. That may be the extent of side-by-side production.

1. The C8 will likely have a transparent engine cover.
2. The C8's doors will incorporate some kind of "innovation".
3. The C8's doors will be power assisted. GM has applied for a patent for power actuated doors.
4. The C8 will have a 48 Volt electrical system.
5. The C8's trunk will accommodate two sets of golf clubs.
6. The C8 will share its platform and assembly line with a Mid-Engine Cadillac. The Cadillac will probably be powered by a twin-turbo V8.
7. The C8 is rumored to be powered by a flat-plane crank LT1 V8 in 600hp, 800hp and 1,000hp variants.
8. GM has applied for copyright protection for the name "ZORA" fueling speculation that the new car will bear his name.

During C8 testing on the Nurburgring testing abruptly stopped. It was later revealed that GM engineers were having a problem with the C8's electrical system. As a consequence further testing was delayed, production delayed and the C8's official unveiling pushed back.

Current speculation is that the C8 will make its debut at the National Corvette Museum Bash happening late this April, but a recent rumor claims that the C8 will make a surprise debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next week.

Who is John Berg? Sounds like he bought into a bunch of inaccurate rumors, which are very dated. But, he's likely right about some things. I'm not going to revisit which is which because they'll all been debated here ad nauseam.

John Berg doesn't "know" jack.

This may seem like a minor point, and I will concede that, but the issue is the veracity of the post. If one thing is wrong, how many other things are wrong? GM did not apply for "copyright protection." It applied for trademark protection. These are two completely different animals. Copyrights are administered by the Library of Congress. Copyrights cover written material and are symbolized by the (c) symbol.Trademarks are administered by the US Patent and Trademark Office and are symbolized by both the "TM" symbol until they reach the status of registered with the (R) symbol. To qualify for a trademark it must be used in interstate commerce and if it is not used within five years, the mark may become invalid. This is likely why GM renewed the trademark last year. Once a trademark gets on the "Registered list" (r) it is pretty much bullet proof--to the point of absurdity.

For example, a woman named "Sony" opened a restaurant under her name: "Sony's Restaurant." Sony the corporation sued and Sony, the person, lost. The argument was that people might become confused and falsely believe Sony's Restaurant was owned by the Sony Corporation. Locally a friend of mine operated an ISP (Internet Service Provider) named "Olympic ISP" named after the Olympic Mountain Range. The Olympic Committee issued a cease and desist order based on the fact they owned the term "Olympic" for the Olympic Games. As far as I know they did not sue the mountain range.

This appears to be a list of previously-mentioned rumors and posts made by people, at least one of whom admitted to making it up. Please don't title such a thing "What we know". It should be titled, "Crap people have said about the C8, much of which is B.S."

What we KNOW is absolutely nothing. At this point in time, everything is speculation. Unless of course you work for GM and are sitting here laughing at the masses.
