So I came across this nice Tuxedo Black 69 convertible on craigslist:

But the trim tag looked like a repo so I googled the vin:

It's just another big reason why real, factory black 900 code cars with the original trim tag are at a premium.

I have a 1969 black with red interior side pipe car. Didn't realize factory black was such a big deal. Its basically the same car with red interior. I'm doing a frame off restoration but I already ordered all after market suspension from VanSteel and now considering going LS3 6sd and storing the 350/350 4sd. What do you guys think? Should I stay stock or go ls? I don't plan on selling it but you never know about the future.

Everyone has their own preference. If your car is an original black red car with the original trim tag and motor, I would restore back to original.

If you want the LS3 then do it or it will bug you the entire time you own it. Who says we will even be able to keep these on the road with everything headed electric/hybrid?
Cant worry about what ifs...LS conversions are big right now....some scoff but many love em. Reliable quiet efficient etc.

It is your car, do as you want. Restomods are as valuable as keeping it factory stock, but if your planning on driving it a upgraded 69 is so much more fun to drive than stock. Ask me how I know. T

so then what's a 69 L46 nuts and bolts restored, all correct, but wrong color, great paint roadster worth?
real triple blacks are worth 50-60.. or more?

buy on condition folks... if you are a numbers chaser, then make darn sure its real and you are paying for what it is.

For anyone wanting to see what the OP was talking about, go to the registry, find the car using the VIN shown in the CL ad on the block stamp, scroll all the way to the right and voila, pics of a white car!

The whole value change dependent on color is tough to put a number on but if there is one color that demands more money, black is it. Seems like real 900 vettes go for 10-15% more than most other colors, sometimes more. Something else to think about is the valuation tools on the web(Hagerty is my favorite) don't typically take in account for color so just one more thing that takes away from thier accuracy.

When I bought my 68 L36/M21 factory 900 car I had to fly 3/4s the way across the county to view/buy it and pay to have it shipped back to California, really added quite a bit to the total cost of buying the car but when I saw it and the seller sent me pics of the block stamp and trim tag I knew I had to at least go see it in person. I'm not sure what its worth now but after top flighting the car I doubt I'd take anything south of 70k for it regardless of actual value.

It's funny to see the number of cars in each color produced back then and which colors were popular vs todays color choices.

DKM I saw the same add and requested the missing trim tag that was not in the original listing. What got me worried was that the tank build sheet is there and completely legible except for a tear and some bizzareness making the color unreadable. Take a good look at the build sheet!!!

When I got the Trim tag then all the bells went off. Its a shame nice restoration but why try to make it what it is not!!!!! Ike

I noticed that on the build sheet too! I am not taking anything away from the car-it looks like a nice 69, but the next owner is going to buy it and think he has a real black car. Same thing is true with this listing. Beautiful color combo but a repo trim tag:

For someone they will make great cars, for me, unfortunately I like original, correct cars with paperwork and history.
