1995 Trans Am or 2012 C6 Grand Sport Corvette
I know this is a choice I will have to make but I have known a few of you over the years from this forum and other forums so your opinions mean a lot.
I have pretty much always had a Camaro or Firebird at some point in my life. I currently love my 95 Trans Am but haven't been able to drive it because it wouldn't pass emissions test and haven't had time to take it to have it checked as to why. My husband and I have put a lot of labor under the hood together. It needs a paint job but I always get compliments on it. It has 180,000 miles on it. I am considering selling my car and getting my Dad's Corvette he had. We both loved cars and spent time together on them. My sister always joked how I was the car - daughter when it came to my Dad wanting to talk about cars. My Dad's car only has 7800 miles on it and its in pristine condition. Its a great opportunity as far as what I would be able to buy the car for. I'm just having a tough time making the decision as to do I get my Dad's car which is newer and doesn't have any problems or do we sell the car and I can take some of that money and put it into the Trans Am. I could keep both but I'm trying to be practical. Thanks your reading and giving your opinions Jules __________________ |
Be practical. Get the Vette and offload the TA.

LT vs LS. Easy choice.
Coming from someone with an '97 SS -> 2010 GS. I wouldnt get a convertible unless you've owned one for a while tho... I also had a convertible and I hated the maintenance required on the vinyl/cloth top |

I swapped my 95 Z28 for a used but in-good-condition 05 Base Coupe and it was definitely an upgrade. Very similar but way different. It was a logical progression from the Camaro. I bought the Camaro new and loved that car. Had it for 19 years but it was getting long in the tooth so it was time to fix it or toss it. I opted to toss it and move into the new century.
I think you should drop the high mileage Firebird and go for the Corvette. Mind you I recently dropped the old tech '05 Corvette and bought a brand new 2018 VW Golf R which is quite stunning how good it is. Would have preferred a newer Corvette but I needed to get something more practical for my wife to enjoy and the Corvette was getting tougher for her to get in and out of. I wish the Camaro hadn't started falling apart and I know exactly how you feel. But I feel I ended up making the right choices. |

I own a 2012 Grand Sport m6. No question get the Grand Sport just an incredible machine.

I like a third choice: sell both and buy a nice, low miles 2000+ TA or Camaro and invest the leftover money. Hell, you might even be able to buy one of each, maybe a Pontiac with T-tops and a Camaro convertible? It sounds like you're an F-body person and there's nothing wrong with that, the Corvette just might not do it for you. But you'd also be foolish to put any significant money into a '95, especially one with high miles that needs paint and who knows what else.

I have a 2010 GS (my 5th Vette). As a teen and young adult, I owned 3 Birds. I love the F-body! One of these days, I will purchase a ‘91 Bird as a build project. But, I will NEVER give up the Vette. You are the inverse of my scenario. I whole heartedly suggest jumping into the Vette. No doubt whatsoever. It’s a completely different world and performance platform. You can always restore the 95 TA or buy another one as a project car. And, you too, will NEVER give up the Vette. |

Buy the Vette, but if you have room keep the TA too. In a few months, if you find the TA is getting neglected then it is probably time to let it go. You won't regret getting the C6 GS.

Really a easy choice with these two options. GS is by far a way better, more fun, better looking more practical car. |
I've had camaros, a firebird, a trans am and corvettes almost all my life. I currently have a 2012 corvette that I bought 2 years ago with 8,700 miles. Get the corvette.

I'd go with GS. Who wants to deal with an old car that needs a lot of care.

As far as which car I'd rather have, it's the C6 by a million miles.
As far as emotional attachment, there's a case for both but the fact the C6 belonged to dad is a clear win in my book. Obviously you have to answer this for yourself. As far as being practical, it doesn't sound like you have the time and/or wherewithal to undertake a restoration of the Trans Am yourself. Paying someone else to do things right (at least my idea of "right") will gobble up all the proceeds from selling the C6 and then some. I'd keep the C6. |
I believe you will drive the C6 way more often and spend way more time enjoying it. You can take it on long road trips without a second thought. The TA you will likely spend more time working on it and driving it much less often. Neither is a bad way to spend your time, just different. I would lean towards the C6 GS.

I've got a 1995 Camaro Z28 convertible with the manual 6-speed, and a 2013 Grand Sport coupe with the manual 6-speed.
They are very different cars. The GS is confidence inspiring compared to the Z28. The Camaro is just old technology. The steering is numb, even with the rag-joint eliminated and a new rack. The brakes are OK, but only because I upgraded to C5 Vette front calipers and rotors. It still does not stop as well as the GS. The Camaro's T56 transmission does not feel as nice as the Vettes TR6060 even though the Camaro has a Hurst shifter. The Camaro has SLP Bilstein shocks, 1LE anti-sway bars and 17" upgraded wheels and it does not handle anything close to the GS. The only thing the Camaro does as well as the Corvette is make noise. With a set of headers and a Borla catback exhaust it barks really nice. If you think the C6 Vette interieor is bad, the 4th generation Camaro and firebird interior is literally a plastic joke. My GS is nearly 100% stock, including the air filter and floor mats. The only mod on it is a mild to wild exhaust controller. The Corvette needs nothing for modifications, the Camaro needs everything to even be tolerable in today's world. I've just owned it too long to be able to say goodbye to it. |
I think it would be pretty special to have the corvette that was your Dads. Just sayin'. I think it's an easy decision.
