Late 63 Dash Parts
Hello everyone. Thank you for the invite to the forum. Very new here but would like to rip off the band aid with a question you may already have an answer for.
Looking for the insert / bezel used on late 63 builds in which they used a 64 gauge cluster with the smaller 63 steering column collar. Looks to be a filler piece mounted between the collar and cluster. Late 63 specific. Any info would be great since it seems they are not being reproduced. |
That is a VERY late 63 and this is what you're looking for...
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...a3cef0bb6f.jpg I really think that piece wouldn't be hard to fabricate but I've NEVER seen one in person nor do I know anybody that repros them...and oh Welcome to the Forum... You might try David Sokolowski in California: 310-329-5334 |
I have heard that there were about 200 63s that got the 64 cluster. Just curious, but how close to the end of production is yours? |
David is in California but the posted phone number is correct.

That's terrific. Thank you Frankie the Fink. Exactly what I'm after. I'd like to keep the car as correct as possible. I will be pulling the cluster to see if there is a date stamp. Will keep you posted.

I know nothing about 3-D printers but I wonder if somebody could produce a one-off facsimile of this on one of those somehow... Otherwise, I think one could be fashioned from some metal stock and common hand tools - I've done similar things... |

It looks like it has the "grain" on it.
The later 63 clusters that have the extra rectangle cut out of the bottom for A/C cars became weak in this area which resulted in that lower piece hanging out in space to get broken off by a knee or some other act. This repaired cluster has been in one of 65silververt's 63 cars for several years now; the grain transition from the vinyl "patch" to the cluster camera case over the not-quite-cured JB-Weld was done with a scratch awl, magnifying headpiece and patience... https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...07c6ddb5b4.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...457fbc905f.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...609a43d5e1.jpg |
Late 63 Dash Parts
So ......FYI for vettsplit 63, scouring through the NCRS book and looking the car over well it seems it is in fact what is referred to as a late build. It has the June body code and the cluster used is date stamped June 13, 1963. It does however still have the early gas filler which dates it no later than June 25. Though I have seen a car with a final serial just past mine with the more traditional cluster. Either way I'm very grateful for the help here on this forum and will be in touch with those mentioned to track down a insert or possibly manufacture one. Thanks to all!

My 16,000 mile 63 ser# 20,7xx has the late dash with the insert and the late gas lid door. |
That's interesting. The trim tag on my car is dated K4, or the 4th week of July. My serial number is 20,396, and the last production # for July, according to Nolan's book, is 20,990. Working two 9 hour shifts, 5 days a week, and managements aim of 56 cars per shift, i calculate my car was built Friday, July 25, 1963. My car has the early small hole instrument cluster. My coupe body # is 10,144 of 10,594 total . And I know the instrument cluster is original to the car. |
I would bet more than a few of these cars had cluster housings swapped around over 1/2 century for various reasons...
My May 29th car had the A/C later cluster that was badly cracked; I repaired it and sold it to a forum member as I had a restored cluster with restored instruments from an earlier car that was "plug and play" so I installed it... It didn't get hit on judging....but it was mentioned to me... There isn't a clear cut-over on some of these rolling production changes IMO.... |
