Drinking & car auctions
I had to laugh as I watched the mecum auction for 2 days. There has been thread after thread about all the drunks that buy cars at auctions. In their opinion spending stupid money on cars because they drank too much. Didn't see anyone drinking or drunk that spent from 50,000.00 to 2 million on cars there. Wish the armchair bidders & wantabes would quit bad mouthing those that have the money to buy & pay what they want for a car. Sorry for the rant but I get tired of those that don't have, bad mouthing those that do.

Not going to politicize this, but there is a lot of animosity nowadays toward those who have worked hard and achieved a certain level of success. In the end, you've earned it and it's your's to spend however you wish without explanation (even if you're drunk :D) |

I was at the Kissimmee Mecuum auction and yes alcohol was being consumed as is at other auctions I have been at. I'm not sure I saw anyone drunk.

I agree with the OP. The common accusation about drunk buyers just smacks of jealousy to me. I go to many Mecum and Barrett events every year and while I’m sure there’s a stupid buy made from time to time by an inebriated bidder, most buyers take the effort to get bidder passes and spending limits and go to an event prepared to buy a car. That’s what they are there for. |
I've been to a few of the big auctions and didn't see anyone falling down drunk. I have to believe most of the cars are purchased by sober folks that know what they are buying. I think the times have changed a bit since the mid 2000's where some people just bought cars to be cool and thought they could make big money on flipping them. Then the housing market blew up and money got tight. Lots of guys sold at big time losses.
I've been watching a bit of the Mecum auction and it looks like the prices gaining ground on the nicer cars. Looks like maybe the street rods are loosing some value. I've got nothing against guys that have cars built by the pros or buying at the auction. Some just don't have the time or the skills but doesn't make them any less of a car guy. |

I own three companies and my time is valuable, a lot of the time having someone else do the work is just the most cost effective measure or the only way I can actually afford to get the car done. I love working on my cars, I've been involved in racing and building cars for nearly 40 years, but many times paying someone to do the work or buying a completed car is by far the cheapest route. Maybe one day I'll retire and just work on my cars. YMMV |
having a waiter coming by once every hour with a watered down drink is not my definition of being drunk..
just like at the casinos ... same concept. |
