Good Driving Roads?
What are some of people's preferred roads to run? I'm down in Temecula, CA and new to the area. I'm assuming some mountain runs like Angeles Crest are off limits for a bit?

Palomar Mountain is my favorite in SD County. I drive up and down South Grade Rd a few times when I go up there. Go to the observatory between runs to let the car cool. East grade Rd is also fun, it's not as steep and more of a 4th or 5th gear Rd where I do south Grade in 2nd and 3rd.
Drive South from Palomar to Julian, get some pie at Mom's Pies. Then head further south and take Sunrise Hwy. Hit the 8 and head West and take 79 back to Julian. Lots of other great twisty roads in South County. I do all my spirited country drives on weekdays. The weekends have too many tourist going to Julian. On a good weekday I'll maybe see one or two other cars on Palomar or Sunrise. |
Take a look at this: http://www.sundaymorningrides.com/road/states/CA/ I lke CA79 (not Winchester Rd) to 371 to 74. Right on 74 to Idyllwild, left to Palm Desert. Or keep on 79 all the way to 78. Left on 78 through Julian. |
Watch out for motorcycles. |
x2 on weekdays or very early Sunday. If you want a tight switchback rd try Mt Baldy off the 210. Somewhere on Dropbox I have a vid up from yrs ago.
Wouldnt do it today, way too many bicyclists ruin it for everyone. Plus its a major bu$t period. |
Thanks guy!

Got a chance to run Palomar Mountain. Awesome run up the mountain. Took 79 through Temecula and around the range. Got a little chilly up there today, around 37°.

Hpde’s at willow, chuckwalla, Irwindale, buttonwillow.... drive as fast as you possibly can without risking killing someone! for scenic drives, pch is pretty. Or go up to big bear. |
Email notifications@justdriveit.net , they have scheduled drives in your area every other week.

Coming down the east side of Palomar Mountain you can continue east on 76 past Lake Henshaw, left on 79, right on S2 and left on Montezuma Valley Road. This will take you down the "Glass Elevator" (great switch back with a steep elevation change) down to Borrego Springs. Good place to grab a bit to eat before returning the same route.
