Photo help, C3 (1969) alternator wiring
 

Hi all, I'd like to request a photo of the alternator wiring - the back of the alternator connections and the break off of the wire from the wiring harness. My original alternator has a 12:00 clocking. I replaced it a while back with a alternator with a clocking 90 degrees counterclockwise when looking at it from the back (don't know if that means 3:00 or 9:00). I bought a new alternator with the same clocking as my original but it appears I don't have enough wire coming out of the harness to make the plug in connection without stretching the heck out of it. Triple thumbs up, thanks rvzio. Just noticed, your clocking is 90 degrees clockwise from my new alternator.

Here's the new alternator at 12:00 clocking which is what the oem original alternator had.

Hello Do you have any update on the clocking position of your alternator? I have a 1975 and thought my alternator was upside down. It has the electric connection in the same location as RVZIO. But as far as I can tell from different websites and photos the correct position should be like yours.

Interesting....if I installed your alternator on my '71 big block, it would be at the 9:00 position and rvzio's would be at the 12:00 position. I think the orientation gets confusing when purchasing a replacement.

It's been decades since I had one apart. Couldn't you remove the 4 bolts and rotate the rear housing?

That is what I read on several other posts when using the search function. As long as you dont pull the entire thing out and rotate the front or top of it, it seems as if it would be easy. If it is pulled too far apart then the brushes may come out of their position. Even if that happens the posts suggested it was not a big deal, and is easy to remedy.
Something for me to consider as this weekends project.

Update on the alternator clocking. You cant just take the 4 bolts out and rotate it. The housing interferes with the bottom section, and it will not rotate around. So I took it apart and found the 2 springs and brushes. There is a small hole that will allow it to be reassembled, and put in something like a WD40 spray can straw to hold them in place. Place the 2 units together in the proper position, and install and tighten the 4 bolts. Wiring connection is at the 12 o clock position now like Twin Rays photo shows.
