Lowering coolant temps - currently 220

My tuner is telling me that I need to lower my engine temps as they are currently around 220 when cruising, even with very low ambient temps. Reading some other threads on the forum, apparently 220 is a fairly normal temp for the 2014 year C7, and GM changed some things (water pump?) for 2015 onwards to get the temps around 200.

I'm planning on installing a Mishimoto 160deg t/stat, and running a 60/40 water/dexcool mix with a bottle of water wetter thrown in for good measure. I have also had my long tube headers sent out for ceramic coating.

My question is, is there anything else I can do to keep my temps lower?

220 on the analog gauge? or 220 on the digital gauge?
Apparently on the 2014 car the analog gauge is wrong:

220 in HPTuners, so I imagine that will tie in with the digital one?

I did the Dewitts HP radiator and heat ex-changer with a 180 degree stat. Normal driving temps were around 180-185 back at the end of Alabama summer.
Got up to 200-205 when long moderately aggressive street driving.

I run a coolant booster in all my cars.
On the Hwy,my LT1 varies 189-193

I was thinking about upgrading the radiator too - I assume you stuck with the OEM fans? Does the radiator double up as a trans cooler or anything else other than engine coolant? I dont mind draining engine coolant, but I hate messing around with trans fluids and stuff.

In addition to 50/50 glycol? or straight water with coolant booster?

Yes OEM fans and Radiator is only engine coolant. I'm still running stock oil and trans cooling.

160 stat and turn up the fans.

Your tuner should be able to command the cooling fans to maintain a temperature of 190F. That how I set my tune up and I have the stock thermostat. Also, 100% antifreeze is actually less efficient than the recommended 50/50 mix of water/antifreeze. Even on hot days I only see 195F peak on my 2015 C7.

Our radiator will help bring those temps down. Quite a bit thicker than factory and all aluminum. Give us a call 972-429-1963.

I'll drop you guys a line in a couple of weeks when my car spending budget gets reset. I've already built up a pile of receipts this month hehe.

OK so I've purchased an AMP billet thermostat housing with a Motorad 160deg t/stat and I've also got a Mishimoto t/stat on the way for good measure.

I _think_ I'm right in saying that the AMP housing uses a t/stat for an LS3, as I cannot find a Motorad one that would work with an LT1/4. Hopefully this means it is better quality than all of the C7 ones I've seen failing on here?

I did the LG radiator, LMR housing with the 160, I also did the D3 fan set up also, But I do have a A/A TI blower on my car also. Now even in a hard summer in traffic my car may hit 205 with the air on.. I do have a 2014 car A6 also before the upgrades it was 220 plus all the time just to hot for me.

I also use EVANS waterless coolant also in the car.. Some may say not worth it but never have to chg it out and the coolant - & + point is much better the a 50/50 mix... Robert

I saw where they are offering 15% off, just use DW15 at checkout.

The oem fan is different on the 14s also. You can buy the 15 up oem fan for about $200 on rock auto. It's basically just a higher amperage motor Gm started using when the Z06 came out.

The 2015 and up have a 90 celcius t-stat which is colder than the 2014 stat. Put a 180 stat in the car, run as little antifreeze as you can ( temps in your garage if you do not drive it during the winter) You maybe can get by with + 10 degree protection versus - 35 degree protection, run a water wetter and have the fans programmed/tuned to come on earlier. I run a max of 185 to 190 degrees no matter how hot the day is.

FYREANT 01-21-2019 10:32 PM

Jim, not sure if you have to worry about freezing temps where you are but my formula is 20% dexcool, 80% distilled water, 1 bottle of water wetter. My car (before I took it apart) was running about 165* at cruising and would peak at about 190-200 max sitting in traffic and would immediately cool down again upon starting to move. I also have an LMR 160 stat and housing in mine.
