Replacing 67 evaporator SBC
I an used to working on C3's . I have replaced many parts and done many rebuilds, 5 speed, Vintage air, engine rebuilds, I got a C2 due to a close friends passing. The car is mint, NCRS, it's a SBC . The A/C evaporator leaked so I will need to do the carpets at some point. Right now (soon) I need to do the evaporator. I had a shop I trusted to do the work - they do not want to touch the car because it's so pristine.
Long story short looks like I need to do it myself. How bad is the job and what should I expect.. I was told to do the heater core at the same time. Low mileage car. Thanks in advance.. |
The whole job is going to be a PITA. There’s a lot to do, and just changing the heater core is time consuming. Test the heater core before the install. New ones can leak. If you don’t have any patience, farm it out. Good luck. |

I'm not sure I follow "the evaporator leaked so I will need to do the carpets." Regardless, if you do not have a C2 factory service manual outlining the removal/install steps and if you are not in a hurry PM me and I will scan the pages from the 64 or 65 manual. I forget which manual has the info, maybe both. Anyway, once scanned I can email the PDF to you. When you have the box open and the evaporator out check all the seals, you may find seal replacement is necessary. If the system dryer is the original have that restored, you stated in your other thread which EMDOLLAR sites in post 3, the system had been converted to R134 and since the car is a 98 pointer the dryer may have been restored. The forum vendors or Doc Rebuild can supply a seal kit for just the evaporator box. Check the replacement core for leaks before installing. Be dead certain the leak is coming from the evaporator, two final words, dead certain.

If your carpets have an issue, pull them up and look for antifreeze. Antifreeze will not evaporate and if there was a past leak, even if fixed, it could be antifreeze. I’ve had that happen. Ed |
My friend had the Sniffer test done twice - two different shops before he passed - they both said it was the Evaporator - the A/C does loose a charge , no sign of oil on any of the fittings / Compressor.
I charged it - it lasted 4 days then lost most of the charge. For some strange thing it feels like oil under the carpet. No antifreeze loss during the summer. He had the motor rebuilt 1 year before he passed I think they may have yanked on the pluming for the A/C when pulling the motor. |

My friend passed ( from cancer) in early November. I spent a lot of time with him as he went through Chemo which didn't work. I would up with the car. 2 weeks later my younger brother was diagnosed with cancer and is starting Chemo - this week. So my mind has been on other things .. That is why I was looking to farm it out.. |
