How to remove..
I have a 73 and I getting ready to redo the intake. As you can see the person I bought the car from painted it and it is now blistered. I removed the carb and tried to remove the spacer underneath, it won't budge. What am I missing on removing the spacer?

Look down those "unused" holes toward the inside to make sure there aren't any screws holding the spacer in place. If not, I would assume they installed it on top of wet paint, used a sealer, or the gasket is simply baked in place. If so, use a pair of nuts on each of the studs to screw them out, then either rap the spacer with a plastic mallet or tap a steel putty knife into the gasket area between the intake and spacer. It should come off. Once off I'd scrape and clean both of them and replace gaskets when you reinstall everything. |
Somebody might have RTV the spacer to make sure it didn't leak. In other words, its glued. I think I would try a putty knife that can be tapped on with a hammer to see if it will move. As a last resort, double up the mounting nuts on one stud at a time. Using two wrenches you can back out the studs. I would remove three, then try to get the spacer to move sideways with a rubber mallet.

I agree with the above, but be VERY careful not to drop or "push" and foreign material/parts down into the manifold. Maybe use some masking tape to cover the opening....

Thanks guys for your help, nothing in the holes, so my next step will be to remove the studs and go from there. Most likely, will remove the manifold first that way I am sure nothing will get into the engine.. again thanks all for the help.

just get the intake off first,,then go over to the work bench,and throw a trash bag over the eng and close the hood

I'd strongly recommend removing the intake, especially if you are going to repaint it anyway.
In addition to a stuck gasket, it looks like the studs may be splayed out a bit? At any rate, once you get them out, it should be easier to remove the spacer. |
