Restomod my 1967
I'm looking for someone to do some updating on my 1967 Corvette Coupe. It currently has a period correct 427 with an original Muncie 4 speed. I want to change the engine to a street friendly high horsepower big block and the transmission to a 5 speed. I also want to do some modifications to the suspension to make it handle better.
. I live in SW Virginia and I would prefer the eastern US to have work done. The budget is up to 30K Please let me know if you can recommend someone for the job. Thanks, Jim |
You might want to add where you are from, and how far you are willing to travel Tom M |
Your budget will help too |
Although the definition of "Restomod" is a whole (mind numbing?) discussion in itself and unlikely to ever be set in stone, I'm not sure what you describe what you want done will qualify your car as a restomod. On my '66 L79, I have a Tremec 5 speed trans, Steeroids rack & pinion steering, a composite rear spring, upgraded Bilstein shocks, a smaller diameter steering wheel, LED tail lights and a couple other little things I'm sure I forgot. Even with all these modifications, I don't think anyone, including myself, would classify it as a restomod, but it does drive and handle better than stock. Best of luck with your upgrades.

With 30k you might want to get your wish list smaller or do the work your self. These cars ride and handle great in stock form with good radial tires |
Not worried too much about the ride I would rather put the money on a big bad engine.

depends what you want a big bad BB can run you 15-20K. then 5 speed is 5k or more that does not include all odds and ends you need to build it. then to pay a shop 100+ bucks a hour your budget will be spent quicker then you think
|
With your budget of 30k you can do a lot. I would suggest you contact Trey at StreetShop and discuss your project. They build a custom frame that accepts late model suspensions and they have everything figured out. I am planning one myself and I am going to sell the old frame to someone doing a "correct" resto. I would also suggest considering a LS small block engine instead of the big block. You can get a lot of HP from the LS. A great restoration shop here in michigan is Masterworks

You might want to consider an LS Engine.
I am almost certain you cannot restomod a Corvette for $30k, but you can have the engine and a lot more. Attachment 48335148 |
Do you think that a LS7 engine swap is achievable? Does anyone make all the conversion parts everything from mechanical to computer?

Do you have any recommendations for someone to do a complete swap to a LS7 and matching transmission on a 1967?
|
Jim,
I've put an LS7 and 5 speed in a '63. Do you have any plans for the big block in your car now? I have a C2 couple roller I could use the big block in. The LS7 crate engine is a dry sump motor. I converted to wet sump which makes the install much easier without having to mess with the oil canister, etc. Do you have a preference for dry or wet sump? Engine/trans/ecm package is about $22,500 just for the parts. If you go with the T-56 magnum 6 speed manual you may have to raise(cut) the tunnel. TKO600 5 speed should fit without cutting the tunnel. |

What horse power is your current stock BB engine? |
I just rebuilt the engine with with new aluminum heads, roller cam and EFI. I don't know the HP but should be around 400 not happy with the performance compared to new LS engine. I have a 2013 corvette with a LS7 and that engine is what I wish I had done on my 67.

I would sell the engine. It's really nice looking with chrome valve covers, ignition shrouding and wire covers. It's freshly rebuilt with aluminum heads, roller cam and HEI
