Aftermarket Steering Wheel did not pass Inspection - TEXAS

Hi All,

This is mainly for Texas owners.
I just bought my 88 last week and went to get it inspected today. It failed due to the aftermarket steering wheel. I just spoke to the inspector and he said it was too small. I didn't think it was.

But has anyone else had this issue with passing inspection.

That doesn't look small, did you measure the diameter (vs stock)?

I'm not able to find the stock diameter. Anyone know?

You got an a hole for an Inspector. Did you do something to piss him off? Maybe a run in with his daughter?

I'd just go to another place. It's not an absurdly small wheel or anything, looks to be about the same size as stock.

You forgot to put the six pack of beer on the passenger seat. Dude, we live in Texas and have a "beer based economy."

Something else I forgot to mention. He said it was smaller than the "Big wooden" wheels that were originally on this model. I said, those didn't have big wooden wheel! He said, some did... :willy:

The stock wheel on my '94 is approximately 14.75" in diameter.
From: https://www.dps.texas.gov/RSD/VI/safetyCNGTraining.pdf

Reject if: "Modification of the steering system which affects the proper steering of the vehicle, or the steering wheel has been modified or replaced with one that is noticeably smaller than original manufacturer’s equipment."

I would try another inspection place. Find out where the local old car guys go.

Just how big does that idiot think vette wheels are supposed to be? Any bigger and it would be digging into your legs.

Here's what I would do. Go on ebay or go to a wrecking yard. Get a huge wheel out of a bus or large truck. Pull in, swap it, and ask him if this one will be passable.

Thank you! That's perfect. We have already found a place that will work.

That inspector must be one unhappy person.

368mm (14.5") is the MVMA advertised specification if anyone should ask!! It is certainly presentable. Does it have a functioning horn button? If you take it back to him isn't it a N/C event? Were you charged anything?

What diameter is yours?

Thank you for that. And yes it does have a horn. If that is the diameter of the OEM, then mine is only about 3/4 inch difference in diameter. I don't think that is a safety issue!

That's '88 Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association specification published by GM.
