Exhaust pipe wrap near fiberglass rear spring

Who has had success, and with which exhaust wrap, blocking the heat in the area where the pipes pass under the rear spring?
I'm looking to shield the fiberglass monleaf spring from the heat of the exhaust.
That area had been wrapped, but after recent exhaust system work, that old wrap fell apart and needs to be replaced.
I don't know which wrap was there.
I am considering this DEI BLACK TITANIUM™ EXHAUST WRAP
http://designengineering.com/black-t...-exhaust-wrap/
Has anyone had experience with this wrap for my intended purpose?
Thank you

^ ^ ^ I wrapped my spring similarly to how you wrapped yours, and I also want to wrap the pipes with a heat wrap. Hearing the horror stories about heat degrading the integrity of the fiberglass spring has hit my paranoid nerve. Overkill on my part? Thank you for your comment

Why not a simple piece of aluminum sheet metal between the differential and exhaust? Had my composite spring for 30 years.

Thanks, ignatz. You were good enough to offer your solution to me a while ago, remember? I still have the info you sent to me regarding this.
I'm just gathering all options. I am the hyperbole of slow and steady.

Why did you do that, Ed? :toetap: I was just starting to feel better about this whole heat isolation thing. :ack:

I did not remember that, although this comes up a few times now and then. I will offer up an additional goodie. Since that picture was take I pop riveted a steel rectangular 1/2" wide section to the shield and secured the exhaust pipes to the shield with a large hose clamp through the steel section and around the pipe. Gives the rubber muffler hanger a little more rigidity and helps center the exhaust tip.

The DEI wrap is what I used. Followed the directions, wet it, applied patiently... so far so good. It has been on for well over a year with no issues.

Painted with the DEI black high temp spray as well...

FWIW, when I bought my composite spring from VB&P roughly 5 years ago they gave me some adhesive strips that had temperature sensitive dots on them. I can't remember the specifics, but if the dots reached certain temps they would turn a corresponding color. I put them on the exhaust pipe side of the spring for both pipes and the temps didn't even come close to what would endanger the construction on the spring. I haven't had any issues and I look closely every year while re-torquing the bolts for the mounting plate.

I've used the DEI black wrap extensively. I have wrapped headers, pipes, etc.
I did wrap the area of the rear mono spring near the exhaust pipes. Although I really didn't feel much heat coming from the pipes in that area. I felt better having it there. I then use the black wire band ties to secure it to the spring. There is even a special tool to tighten up the band ties. You can buy a kit that has the wrap, band ties, and paint all as one kit. The tool is seperate.

You did a great job!

The product details for the black titanium wrap say NOT to wet it. Are we talking about the same product?

Good catch… I looked back in my order history and found that this was the kit I actually purchased.

The DEI kit that I purchased said that I COULD wet the product before application.

I used it without wetting it.

I used ARTR titanium colored lava fiber off of Amazon, put it on dry, threw away the junk metal ties that came with it and used stainless pipe clamps. It’s been excellent.

^ ^ ^ How many feet did you use for what's shown in your photo? Thanks

Ordered one roll of 2" x 50' for $16 and had ample leftovers after doing both pipes. Easiest to do OFF THE CAR if you can drop the pipes. Wear gloves. Helpful to have someone to assist and hold the wrap in place as you re-grab the roll and make every few wraps. I overlapped about 50% if I remember - for sure at least 1/3 overlap. Install a clamp after a first double-wrap and then begin down the pipe. Cut with a shop scissors where you want to stop.

Wrap the spring, not the pipes. :)

cor66vette 02-12-2019 08:09 PM

I do in fact have the spring wrapped, and the pipe was also wrapped, but after the pipe was changed out recently, I want to replace the wrap with new.
