C7 Z51 TT2/ST2 build thread

I'll figure ill make a thread mainly to keep track of the nonsense I've been doing and maybe share if anyone is interested. There isn't a 'lot' of track prepped C7's out there.

In a nutshell I wish I would of sold the car and went with a C5 or even a C6 just because it's a more mature platform. I seem to be chasing my tail to be competitive at TT.

Before I started this project I knew very little about cars. Now I know slightly more than I did!

Anyhow,

The car started out at 3493lbs w/half tank of fuel (2015 Z51 1LT M7)

It's currently at 3212 w/half tank of fuel (and full cage) it does need be re-weighed again as I've removed some more stuff since the last weigh.

Removed
Mufflers
carpet
speakers
passenger seat
seatbelts
airbags
glovebox
partial dash
plastic engine cover bits?
interior trim
Door windows
window motors
behind the dash duct for AC

Added
LG G2 Wing
full Cage/killswitch
custom splitter
aluminum floor plate (covers some wiring that I haven't made sure I can take out yet)
Pull loops to open the doors
custom diffuser fabricated

Changed
switched transparent roof to CF roof
Z06 J56 iron brakes up front
kooks long tube headers
LG G2 Coilovers (removed MSRC setup)
LG MSRC simulators
Sparco 330mm Quick detach wheel/NRG hub adapter/NRG QR (relocated steering wheel buttons)
LG swaybars
ARP studs
Adjustable toe arms
AMT camber kit
AMT seat mount
AMT sphericals

With the aero I'm running 750# Front & 800# rear but at this point it's all just kind of guessing for me.

My actual race weight is 3410 currently with half a tank of fuel, I'm shooting for 3375 minimum race weight & raising my NASA average power to 428

Per my latest dyno, the car is down on power at 393 peak (382 average)

The previous dyno was 419 peak (405 average)

The car finally feels balanced,
Looking at my data for this last event, my optimal was a 1:37.4 (actual time 1:39.6) which amazingly enough would of just barely got a 3rd place lol. But in a field of 10 ill take 4th! Some really fast drivers were out there and TT2 was the largest TT group which is a big departure from last year.

Picked up some fancy BC Forged wheels from @X25 and put on some sticker R7's
295/30/18 & 315/30/18

Probably won't have time to do much before the next event MSRC in Cresson, TX on March 9th.

Title is misleading, car does not have a Z51 sticker. Therefore, it's not a Z51.

Keep up the good work friend!

got my new wheels on, the fronts do poke a little more than I would like, but no big deal I ordered some spats and the "stage 3 winglets" that il'll have to modify to work with my actual splitter.

Car has 750# front springs, rubbing shouldn't be that big of an issue and it'll just self clearance anyway.

Self clearance? My god that's quite a bit of poke. Are those the +52 10.5 inch wheels? I got +65 10.5 wheels with 295/30r18 r888rs coming soon, we can compare then. My z51 is on z06 springs.

Might need to raise ride height 1/2" or so.

ET51 10.5 the car is setup pretty stiff right now. These wheels came from @X25 narrow body car which coincidentally are the same place my coilovers came from lol. After I install splitter diffusers I may look into 800# springs in the front.

I've never cared terribly about a "little rub" there's just over 2" from the fender to the tire so we'll have to see how it goes first. Once I have the spats installed it won't look as bad aesthetically but I don't really care about that to much either.

I guess the lack of profile picture threw me off. Looks like 1 inch at most from those shots. I'll have mine in within a week, we can compare. Sadly I eill have a lot more travel than you still.

I love seeing new rubber; I think it has become an addiction for me to buy new tires every once in a while : ))
  • I used those exact tires (295 R7s) on My Z51, and probably with the exact coilovers as you know, and had no issues! The capacity of coilovers reducing dive is not fully understood by many; it allows for much better body control, enabling use of wider tires, even at much lower ride heights. I actually used 315 R7s, too, and they worked fine as well.
  • Indeed, you need to install those wheel spats, since tires sticking out cause too much turbulence negating all the aero items up front.
  • Regarding +65 wheels, they are a bit closer than ideal to suspension and brake ducting. Especially with wide tires, it limits the steering wheel turning angles quite a bit, and might rub a bit, too, since that offset does not center the tire by the tallest section of the fender. In any case, I tried them, too (TSWs), and they worked fine. IIRC, they also need at least -2 camber at the rear for better clearance with the fender. Even then, I ended up filing the rear fenders for easier clearance and peace of mind if/when I hit a curb. Fronts were never a problem in my case.

Have fun with the build!!

Thanks! I always appreciate your input. Your thread has been my research over and over and over and over (your budget is a bit bigger than mine hehe).

I know spacers are not the best at the track but that's my backup plan with extended thread lugnuts.

I have 2 degrees all the way around right now and will likely file the rears like you said, but only after trying the tires. 305/35r18 won't be as much width as the tires you tried (I think it was 325 at that point of your build).

Lobster (lol) keep us updated with everything you learn about the setup!

Car looks awesome with the splitter and wing; mean! My $0.02 spend wisely:

1. Just in your rear hatch area I see targa panel mount brackets, speaker brackets, quarter trim brackets. All that can be drilled out.

2. Would like to see pics of your gutted door shells, maybe I can help.

3. What's that cylinder in the rear with the two heavy gauge read cables?

4. That front "poke" may work at your home track but at Road Atlanta or VIR you'd crack your fenders. It's not about the stiffer coil overs, but about rapid compression in certain areas. YMMV. I'm got the TSWs which are 18x10.5 but +65 and they fit very nicely in the front.

5. I still see side glass weather strip in that one pic? You can remove that and the channel under it.

6. Your initial weight seems very heavy for a Stingray. My 2014 2LT with 5/8 thank of gas was 3380.

Keep up the sharing of info.... there are inherent benefits to the C7 vs. the 5/6 but also trade-offs. Keep at it and you'll be competitive... you have stiff competition in your area against LG and Chet.

Very cool build!

lobsterroboto 02-27-2019 07:49 PM

Yep you were right @BrunoTheMellow I didn't spend a lot of time looking at the fenders last night, just snapped some pics and eyeballed it.

Well I went out and measured it and its like 1.5" lol

So yah I'll probably raise it a half inch.

I have 3 sets of wheels right now
@Tool Hoarder the cylinder is a solenoid for my kill switch

I looked up some info from the first time I weighed and my initial weight was 3393 with about half a tank (and that's just me kind of going on a lose memory I don't remember exactly how much fuel I had it was before I decided to go full time track car)

The weather stripping up front is for my polycarbonate "tow windows" for when its shitty outside. I have a little thing fashion where I kind of set them in there so they keep the rain from coming in. I tow with an open trailer and it's the most convenient thing for me at the moment. Ironically on rainy weekends I'll still drive around without them I'm just not terribly smart.

ill get some pictures and have PM conversation about what exactly you're suggesting I remove. I'm totally down for it.

Texas region has some great drivers. I was just happy to be as competitive as I was for the season opener. The GSpeed team is just awesome what they're doing and Chet's right behind them.
I'm hoping to develop the car to be at that level. Some of it's me as a driver to im sure. so I can't neglect that.

I really really need to get headers on the car that's gonna have a substantial impact. more power and a few more pounds. I'm so over weight for class im in no danger of tipping the scales with my current power.

MSR is my home track. Heres my best lap there so far. Z51 with 255/295 r888rs and Z06 aero. 1:23.4

I'm going back in a month with 295/305 r888rs and Z06 springs. Hoping to hit 1:22 flat.

also you mentioned the car is on 750lb front springs. As a comparison Z06 springs are 670lb front. Z51 magride 450, z51 nonmagride 525.

lobsterroboto 02-27-2019 07:57 PM

realistically you should be in the teens MSRC with good tires.

My goal is 1:18 next month for the NASA event.

Tho, it's a fun track that really penalizes mistakes imo. Hell my best is 1:23 my excuse is bad tires that weekend tho. I look forward to getting out there next month for the NASA event with how the car is setup now.

RapidC84B 02-27-2019 07:59 PM

You can cut that door bar out. Door gets a little flimsy to where you can’t slam it, have to press it closed.

Poor-sha 02-27-2019 08:21 PM

Good stuff. Any data on the weight saving with the rear lexan? I plan to just remove the side windows.

I'm waiting on my order to arrive from five star right now. I'll weigh them each separately and then weigh the glass.

RapidC84B 02-27-2019 09:08 PM

Toilets has exact numbers. Said quarter glass was nil, but rear hatch and brackets and shocks were a material amount.

I mean, Im not running r7s and had an essentially stock car on that lap.

On the front tire thing:

By my Z06 fender measurements, you want about 27" fender height from floor to keep it from smackng the fender if the tire won't tuck in. Which hey! That's just about 2" of clearance from the 295/30r18 R7 which makes sense.
