Plans to push the envelope...test results coming: Single Turbo, Built S/B, FED Intake

Ok guys...2019 is shaping up to be what I think will be an interesting and fun year, car-wise. I am very happy with the status, performance-wise of my 2017 Single Turbo Z06. We were able to exceed our 2018 goals for the car and the turbo system development project, with "minimal" mods (e.g. Turbo System, Intake, Cam and other supporting driveline mods) @ 1,250whp with an 8.64@159+ time to back the dyno runs. During the system development, we tested a number of different turbo's AND configurations to settle on what we have to get to a nice balance of street feel and track performance. It proved to be quite an interesting and somewhat expensive exercise, but again really happy with how things turned out. We only stopped where we did because..well ... SBE.

As we were developing the gameplan hardware wise, due to the new-ness of the Gen V V8 architecture, I found that there wasn't a ton of back-to-back or even relative testing of different hardware solutions (e.g. intakes, cams, displacement, turbos, etc.). We found lots of "here is my build" type stuff, but not alot of "this" gained me "that". Fair number of parts/part sellers (e.g. intakes, ported heads, 1 new head casting, etc.), but little showing why or how one was better than the other. If the information was out there, no one was sharing lol...

Our early "success" has left me feeling a bit greedy and really wanting to know how far we can push the turbo system/car with a few more "supporting mods". The stock SBE might live quite a bit longer if I kept boost at the current levels...but what fun would that be...lol. Therefore, we just pulled the trigger on mid-level shortblock build that is specced to handle 1400whp "reliably" and not break the bank. One of the questions that plagued me was of the various intakes that were out there, which one was best when throwing tons of boost at things. There were sheetmetal intakes (e.g. Procharger, G1Pro) and then the bad-ass looking billet ones (LME, Frankenstein, etc.). We decided to say, "what the hell" and spring for an Frankenstein low pro billet intake to replace the G1Pro. We sell them and since we pride ourselves on running what we sell, we see it as a great opportunity to test out some of the new hardware to provide customer guidance. The testing won't be exactly apples to apples, but we can see where the gains are in the curve or at relative boost levels. We will get a chance to see if they are indeed worth the money....but they do look bad-ass (lol). Plans are to get some dyno/tuning runs in and then hit the track as much as we can this year.

After we have maxed the system out, assuming we can keep everything in one piece, we will swap the bone stock heads for some ported Frankenstein versions to see what we see on the dyno, but more importantly at the track. This one will be especially interesting to us, as there have been a number of people, that I respect greatly, advise me to spend money elsewhere and stay with the (bone) stockers as they are capable of supporting some really big hp numbers. Given my experience thus far, I can't argue with them, but let just test it anyway. ...and then there are the CID's LTX all new castings...hmmm..

I plan to share all of our results, successes and failures with the forum. I am going to wait on disclosing the turbo-kit development learnings until we get some more examples on the road and we get some of the other guys coming in to share as well...lol. Either way, should be interesting.

I didn't post this as a look at me thread, but to invite those of you that care to share more of their before/after results for specific hardware changes (e.g. intakes, exhaust, s/c head units, etc.). If some stuff worked, lets hear it. If some stuff fell short of expectations, lets hear that too. Most of the threads are of the "here is my new build/dyno sheet" variety...looking to take it a bit old school with more of a technical discussion w/ live performance examples for us Forced Induction Gen V V8 guys.

I'm dying for a good tech discussion on Gen V motors. It's pretty boring on the forums. I miss the good ole days at Ls1Tech with Mamo, Tooley and Ed. But I digress. I am actually planning to use FED heads on my N/A build. I know this is the wrong section but I am dying for data. I was initially planning to go F/I but that's too easy and boring. Would be cool to do a low lash solid roller like they have done on LS3s.

Are you planning anything on the drivetrain side?

Diff and axles have already been upgraded. Will start to look into trans options.

Whereabouts in mi are you? Do you hit any meets/car shows? Would love to see this setup one day.

Rochester. Haven't really been to too many meets or shows, but plan to make time to get out more this year,

Forgot to add that Im always up for getting together with fellow "car guys".

Love it Earl can't wait to see the progress updates.

The Eagle (FED Intake) Has Landed

The Eagle/FED Low Pro Intake has landed...Pictures don't do it justice. The S/B is being built as we speak. Cant wait to get this thing on....! Finally get a chance to see if the Bad-Ass Billet Intakes are worth it over the sheetmetal (G1Pro) intakes. Cool thing is I will be able to overlay pre/post dyno curves at the same boost (& higher ;-) ) levels... No matter what, sure does look good!

....sure is Purty!

Would love to check out your car. I'm local - I drive a 17' Procharged Z06 ~1100Whp. Drop me a PM if you'd be interested in hitting a show together.

Always happy to get together with other car guys...

very curious if the tapered intake runners make a difference for increasing velocity vs volume. As you know on G1s they are not tapered. Thankful for the one to one comparison always wanted to know. I saw a post on a Camaro procharged where it picked up near 100 horse with the sheet metal G1 intake over composit I believe. Will have to find it again. That seemed like an awful lot. I would be happy with 50.

Thanks Earl. Good luck brother.

On one of these motor don't see any way a 100 rwhp now if you are talking a motor build to do 8,k that is build like these street outlaw cars are then yes & maybe over a stock intake... These dam guys on the dyno can make it do what they want it to do in & around 20% of what it can truly do... Plus diff day weather & that also.. Robert

...track will be my ultimate test!

Starting to make some progress...a lil engine porn

Sorry guys, its been awhile.... Long lead stuff (pistons) finally in, shortblock is almost complete, more engine porn to come...starting to get excited. Stuff is so pretty! Too bad it will be tucked away and abused regularly...lol.

Molnar Technologies and HPR have been OUTSTANDING partners on this project!

That’s pretty awesome! Happy to see this as I myself am also fixing to start rebuilding my car. I’m ditching the F-1X and thinking PTE 98mm Promod up front. Right now I really don’t care about street manners and I’ll gladly cut a hole in the hood and exit the exhaust right out of it! Currently the car pretty much all supporting mods from front to to back including LME built engine. Have made 1400+RW with F-1X but I’m ready to push everything even harder as I’ve become an expert at changing belts(sick of it) I’ll be following your build as I also will be working on mine and maybe we can share some knowledge.
Good luck!!
