Oil at Fuel Pump

My original 4657 63 fuel pump has oil smeared all over the bottom, I've cleaned it up and will run the car tomorrow on the lift and look for the source... Two questions:

Could it be the mounting bolts (loose) or gasket ?

If not I have to think its the oil seal on the diaphragm rod; in which case its a rebuild...
I haven't done one in 6-7 years so -- who has the best kit going right now ?
Ethanol resistant and good parts are imperative...

Don't drip oil on the T-Bird.

Not likely - that’s the wife’s and I want to live a few more years.

Had this happen on my 69 Camaro recently. Changed the gasket and problem went away. Hopefully it’s that simple for you as well.

Not so lucky -- the fuel pump is leaking oil around the perimeter screws at the diaphragm - ordered rebuild kit.
Either diaphragm or oil seal failed internally...

I'll have to rebuild it as its an original 4657 "no frog pad" 63-only fuel pump...

Frank,

When you overhaul the pump broach the surfaces with a flat surface and 220 wet sandpaper.

Will do....this pump had given me 3 years good service since I installed it prior to regional judging....
I just hope the modern rebuild kits are decent.... I went with a Zip kit..

Only takes an hour or so to rebuild one. Done more than a few years ago. Just have to refresh my memory. The trick is to distend the diaphragm before final tightening. Many skip that step.

Not necessarily loose, but both mounting bolt holes are through holes and oil can wick out the threads. I like to use a little sealant on the threads when re-installing a fuel pump.

Had I seen this in time I'd have said call Arthur Gould in NY (well known for water & fuel pumps) what you should use. You may still want to call him & explain what you have to get his take.

The last one I have recorded without the screw pads is dated Dec '63, so that type is also correct for early '64s. (and prior to '63). When you take it off, I'd like to get the date from you and a few other details. I'll send you an email.

Dan,

I'm pretty sure Arthur isn't in NY any more. Check Hemmings for his ad and his current location.

Thanks for that tip, he moved to about 45 minutes from me! Holden MA. Says new ownership but has a website and appears to be just as serious at fuel and water pumps as before. Gould was always the gold standard for this among AACA types.

Looks like you've missed a thread or two here Ernie. :D

Frankie the Fink 03-10-2019 08:00 AM

To catch Ernie up....

I got the wife a pristine one owner 2002 T-Bird "premium" 2 top car with less than 20,000 miles on it for Valentine's Day.
A day that will live in infamy. I had no idea the car was so polarizing....some love it, some despise it. No middle ground it seems..
One Corvette buddy calls it the "Valentine's Day Massacre" but the wife calls it:

Mike I know you have a soft spot for the big blue oval....lol.. Yeah... I've been trolling the c3 side more than the C2 so I had no idea. Looks like a nice car though.
