C7 oil change questions....
Just checking before I do it.
The standard c7 just takes 7 quarts? All I need to do is drain the oil from one bolt, remove the filter, and refill? Is this like a normal vehicle oil change or am I missing something? Plan to use 0w/30 mobil 1 advance fuel economy oil and a k and n oil filter. Thanks. |
Mobil 1 0w-40 ESP is the correct oil to use per GM.

Just be aware that even though the capacity is listed as 7 quarts, you will find that only 6 quarts comes out when you drain it. So don't put the full 7 quarts in when you're done or it will be overfilled. Put in 5.5 quarts to start and then check the level and add accordingly until it shows full. Many of us with the wet sump LT1 have noticed that it only takes 6 quarts to show full on the dipstick.

You might want to do a few searches on oil to use. Don't know what year C7 you have but 5-30 dexos mobil 1 is the call out for the 2014. If you plan on tracking it then the above mentioned oil is the recommendation. I got my 5-30 oil from Walmart, and found an auction for a dozen AC delco filters shipped for 22 bucks!

If you are changing your own oil and care about tightening the drain plug to the correct torque specification (18 Ft Lbs) you are not going to be able to do so without some special tools. You cannot get a standard torque wrench with a 15mm socket on the plug. I recommend using a 15mm crow foot wrench. This wrench will not round or otherwise damage your drain plug like some do. Not cheap but worth the investment.

Just a few tips
Check the old oil filter to be sure the gasket is off. Prefill the oil filter and lightly lubricate the gasket with the new oil. On the first start, hold the accelerator pedal fully down to turn the engine over without starting (you can do this before draining if you don't believe me). Let off the accelerator to have the engine fire up. |

Buy 7, plan on 6, and use the 7th to fill after you've checked out the fill level.
Earlier cars don't have to use the 0w40 dexos2 ESP, which typically goes at about $10/qt. Of course once youre out of warranty you can use whatever you want, but I'd at least be using M1 5w30. I recommend the 15mm crow foot if youre going to torque to specs. I just use the regular Delco PF64 I get from walmart, though I usually use K&N oil filters on my other vehicles as well. |
Completely agree with the above, especially not trying to fit 7 quarts in at once. My 2014 coupe never goes over 6 quarts.

FYI I did find our special 0-40 esp oil (in quarts) at autozone auto parts. Just under ten bucks a bottle.

I have not been following this issue, so forgive me if my question has been answered, but does anyone know why the change from 5W-30 to 0W-40? Is there an emissions issue? I have always used 5W-30 in 2014 Coupe.

0w-40 gives slightly better cold start protection, and is recommended/required for on track use. Previous oil recommended for track use needed to be changed back for street. This new oil can be used in both applications.

Just reading this older post...is the crow foot wrench recommended because you don't get a true torque reading using a standard 15 mm socket, or because of clearance? I've been torquing to 18 using a standard socket for my past 2 Corvettes (C5Z and C6Z) and so far have had my 3 free oil changes on the C7 GS.
