MSD Blaster 2 coil

Anyone know the resistance readings for a MSD Blaster 2 coil? I noticed mine to be getting fairly hot after just a quick turn on. You can touch it but not for very long. You can bench test these for resistance and it should be within a real close value of what the spec calls out. thx

Idk but I know a while back they had problems with that unit

MSD Blaster 2 web page. Just click on SPECS tab.

I had a Blaster SS just fail one day less than a mile from home. Had a spare out the house and had wife run it out to me. Now I keep the spare in the car. LOL.

if its new bring it back

Resistance is futile. Go get a NAPA coil and be happy.

Here's the problems I had with a MSD Blaster 2 AND an Acell coil:https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ion-coils.html

What ignition are you running?

Well I had a MSD 6A with a Pertronix Ignitor in the distributor. Then the other day I decided to drop the MSD and just run on the Ignitor and so far I haven't got that to work because I don't have the wiring diagram anymore. I think my coil is ok though and haven't had a lick of trouble with it in 20 years. I just had it wired up wrong causing the coil to heat up, but it did run that way. So now I'm trying to get the correct wiring from Pertronix but they are very slow in response. :-(

Pertronix has told me to keep the 12 volts on the coil just run a ballast resistor in series with it...... Will that keep the coil from over charging? I'd feel safer using a magnetic ring in the distributor which what they later changed it to using. I have the original version apparently. Hmmmm

I think this is the unit you have if it is a converted points unit......either 1181 or 1181ls (lobe sensing)
You only need a ballast resistor if you use the 1.5ohm coil......I would buy their coil and run it without personally....less wiring and "stuff".

This is the ballast for the MSD POS. Good luck.

Use a good Napa coil youre better off. The other has had a bad rep since day 1

Yes I stumbled onto these diagrams when venturing through the pertronix website. :jester I have the 1181 LS (lobe sensing). So I should be ready to go ... I just need to find a 12 volt wire in the "on" key position and I believe that is suppose to be a yellow wire in the wiring bundle. I did buy a regular coil to run with the ballast. But The MSD coil should work without the ballast it just depends where I want the heat to saturate the most. Right now I'm thinking it would be better to do it in the ballast resistor.
