M-20 - question on a couple numbers on it
 
I'm not really to the point of needing the transmission but in the course of looking it over, I found a couple numbers which I'm not familiar with.

First is the stamping seen below, by the lower right corner of the side cover.

The second, I neglected to take a pic of, is a small metal tag which was held on by one of the side over bolts. Number embossed on that is 839602.

That's the trans. I.D. tag. It should read 3839602. The first 3 is commonly obscured by the attachment bolt. It indicates that it's a 64 wide ratio Muncie trans. used on 250 & 300 HP Corvettes.

Duh, I should have figured that out. Altho I didn't remember having seen that on other trannys discussed here. Built date on the car itself seems to be June 23rd so that's right on the money.

I believe the 1 in the circle means 1 shift. Mine has a 2 in a circle built in Jan ‘64

So day shift, with more bosses around, and guys with more seniority working. June 18, 1964 - that was a Thursday so no Monday blues or Friday "hell-with-it". And late in the year so everybody was (hopefully) well-versed in what they were doing!

I feel better now! :lol:

There is a guy up in Lansdowne PA who specializes in Muncie's and T-10's. Several of us in the Northern Virginia area with C2's and C3's have used him before for Muncie rebuilds and have been very satisfied. We bring our transmissions up to Spring, Fall or Corvette Carlisle and drop them off at his booth and then pick them up at the next convenient event at Carlisle after the completion of the rebuild.
