after hours paint cost question
just taking a stab out there that one of you guys may have an answer on cost of paint or very close guess for me. the local paint store is closed and I'm trying to figure out a budget for my up coming paint job. I'm looking at using PPG paint and wondering what I'm going to pay for 6 qts as well as clear (4 qts). If I dont get an answer tonight its no big deal i can stop tomorrow after work, I just wanted to see if I could get an answer tonight so I can finish my budget with the wife. LOL

Depends on color, quality of clear (high solid) line of PPG as Omni costs less exotic and pearls cost more. To many variables to say.

I stopped today at the local PPG store and discussed options with the counter rep, being my vette is going to be a weekend driver and hot rodded (not stock) and I'm not looking for a show car finish, he pitched me their "shop line" brand of the PPG line. that line has a low and high end to it as well and I went with the high end of the "shop line". Anyway just for reference to others looking at the same pricing dilemma here's what he quoted me. I asked for 6 qts of color '91 corvette "turquoise metallic" with reducer (1 to 1 on that brand) and 1 gallon of high solids european speed clear with activator and the bill comes in at $702.00. pretty much what I was envisioning for spending ($600-$800).

Is this the line they call Omni ?

A friend of mine that's a retired painter says buy the lower line base coat and spend the money on high solid better clear coat since are cars are not out in the sun all day every day it's the better way to go.

Suggest you check into SPI universal clear:
https://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/ a little cheaper than PPG clear and supposed to be great. I plan to go with PPG base Shopline and SPI universal clear. Good luck and thanks for the info. |

I think you will find most painters and paint reps will recommend not mixing brands but stay with one system.

Reading threads like this, brings a tear to my eye. I painted several cars, back in the acrylic lacquer days, where one gallon of primer, at $19.95, properly reduced, and one gallon of color, at $24.99, properly reduced, plus a 5 gallon pail of lacquer thinner, at $39.95, painted your entire car...... |
Interesting and thanks for the info.

I checked it out and and the SPI clear I would need would cost me $63 more than the PPG high end shop line clear + shipping. thanks for the tip but I'll just stay with the local PPG guy.

spi does not charge shipping . it is also a 1:1 mix so you end up with more product. it is also light years ahead of shopline which is not a high end clear ..
