Plugging a SuperSport tire from a screw??
 

Hi,
I just found a screw in my tire with 2700 miles on them. It leaks very slowly. Screw med size but fits well. Front right about 3 inches in from the outer edge.
I have had many tires patched form the outside and patched AND plugged when the tire taken off which worked well. But not for a run flat or on this car.

What does everyone think? Plug,patch or new tire?

So as long as the hole is not within the1 inch from either edge zone , then do both.. Discount put a plug in the hole and patched it from the inside, and then rebalance, my C6 had patches in both rear tires ...its like they are a magnet

Plug and patch. It can be serviced just like any other tire. The run flat portion of the tire is in the inner sidewall. The rest of the tire is the same construction as a non run flat tire.

I just had it at the dealer for the oil change. Bringing it out of storage. Chevy said they would not fix....it should be replaced. But I have a ML350 which Mercedes said the same thing when it was new and since I have then plugged and patched many time with no reoccurence.

But may be running these at a higher speed and they are softer. Was looking for some input. A lot of construction on homes in my neighborhhod and these tires are like glue.

I had a slow leak and turned out it was a nail. They did an outside patch. Took less than 10 minutes. Total cost: $0.00. They don't charge for patches. I'd never been there before but I will be going back.

You should be fine. I’ve had it done to both rear tires. As said as long as not to close to the edge your safe. I had one plug back out a bit and they did it again with a bigger one.

Drove on a plug for 10,000 miles on the runflats on my C6. Never lost any air.

Check out Patchboy. They make mushroom plugs that'll stay put.

Discount Tire does this for free, for the goodwill. You've got run flat tires and a tire pressure monitor. You'll have plenty of warning if anything isn't working.

This is the proper way to repair a flat on a tire. Done properly, you should not have any problems with the tire.

I have had a red pached on my C5 and on my CTS without issue. Funny, the CTS tire no one would touch so I called the dealer because the car only had 4k on it. They pached it properly for $25.

I would fix the tire.
Speaking for myself, I would ram a plug in it and be done.
I wouldn't even take the tire off the car.

I had a slow leak in my right rear tire, discovered a screw. Garage man said he can plug the tire. I decided to replace the tire, a tire failure driving in excess of 100 MPH could be disastrous. The new tire cost $400.00 dollars, mounted and balanced.

Larry we are talking Run Flats so unless it's a catastrophic failure , which in any case is bad .... lol

I have had patches in my C6 , both back tires , and now one on my C7 . I raced both cars and was never worried about a catastrophic failure ... heck even Michlen says it's ok.....and they make the tire

If there's any chance the tire will need to be removed from the wheel I won't go to discount tire. They don't have a touchless and have damaged wheels in the past. They're fine for steel wheels and don't care aluminum though.

I think the same could be said about any place that mounts your tires ....
Not sure if Discount has the same equipment in every location but my Discount does have touchless and they treat my car like its their personal car

I think it's more if the experience level of the person operating the machine ...

As long as it is not in the outer Tread area Discount Tire or any good tire store will repair. I have had my Vette tires repaired with a plug/patch. That is the correct way.

Just has a screw fixed at Discount Tire in wife's 315 section width rear run flat. It was barley penetrated into the inside, BUT they 1) removed the tire and 2) installed a plug patch. BUT--DON'T LET THE PRSSURE DROP. A TIRE WITH NO or VERY LOW PRESSURE IS NOT TO BE REPAIRED. Fill with air and get to the tire shop ASAP! I have overfilled mine by 5 psi so it's close to spec when I'm at the dealer.

I know if I went to the BMW Dealer (hers is an X5 SUV) they would say we don't repair only replace. That is NOT what Michelin says (or in her case Continental.) It is allowed (one repair for Michelin) IF not near the side wall.

Vette tires are like a magnet. Especially the Grand Sport rear (335 section width.) The problem is the tread width on the outside is close to 3 inches and the inside >2 inches. Many dealers won't fix if the nail is in the "outer tread." In fact Discount Tire has a poster with those guidelines. The Firestone dealer in town (the only other one I would let touch my Vette) has a firm rule- not allowed.

I'd never have a car dealer try to take a tire off the rim! They don't do enough! The large Chevy, BMW, Mercedes Dealer in Town brings all his to the Firestone dealer. They have 12 Service Bays and ~20 techs. Only 2 or 3 are allowed to do low profile wide tires, especially run flats. I know I have waited. That manager doesn't want a rim damaged any more that you do!

Just was at the very small Chevy Dealer that did my Courtesy Delivery. Was talking with the Service Manager- great guy. They have only one super C7 Tech and he is the only one to touch Vettes for anything. The Manager said he doesn't mess with changing low profile run flats, takes too much time for his tech to do right! He can't make any money! He sends them to a quality local tire shop in that small town.

Discount tire also fixed mine. I had a small screw in a rear tire. They have the Hunter tire machine, removed the tire from the rim and installed the patch plug. Absolutely no marks at all on the chrome wheel. Excellent service and repair was free.I will definitely order my all season tires from them soon. I had contacted Les Schwab Tire first and the guy I spoke with had no idea what a jacking puck was.
