1989 convertible price?
My gf's mother has a bunch of cars and one of them is this 89 convertible c4. It has 46k and has been sitting for years and i might barter some housework and or cash for it. She was thinking its around $6500 or there abouts. From what others have told me, the car is worth 2000 to 3000.
Although the car has low miles, it needs some work: *Convertible top is dry rot and brittle *rear window is oxidized *paint needs minor touch up in spots *needs tires *needs brakes (rotors look pitted from sitting 5 yrs) *headlight doesnt always flip over *Idles a little rough *low coolant light is on *doors need new weather strip on windows *doorskins are not great up top by window *seats are ripped This is all i can think of for now. Haven't driven it, but it seemed to shift fine. Any idea on price guys? Im willing to pay the honest value and I dont want to seem like im ripping her off or anything like that..how do you price something like this? I think this could be a fun project though. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...ab730c561e.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...76d86a0ee3.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...82e1a15625.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...e126acbc02.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...126c23bb29.jpg |

Shes dreaming. In that condition she would be lucky to see 2500. Few guys I know pay less than agrand in that shape for parts cars.
Its saveable but will take thousands. Low coolant light on an 89 beware of the headgasket they all go. Regardless of what the odometer says the car needs everything. |

If those issues were fixed and the paint was good I'd give 6500, maybe up to 8K.
Without knowing what all might be hiding, no I wouldn't give that. More like 3-4K. |
Cool. Anyone else have any input? U think 2500 is fair?

I'd say it's worth 4500-5000 as it sits. It sounds like it beads some clean up, the top could use refinished, needs some gas run through it and a top off and refresh of some fluids. The only expensive ish issue is the top, a couple hundred bucks. It runs and drives, and just needs some cleanup.
It would be a fun project if you wanted a cool car for cheap. It is not a good project to try to flip and make money on. I just saw it was from your fiancee's mom. RUN AWAY EVEN IF ITS FREE. You dont want or need that crap hanging over your head. Just dont fo it. |

2500 is real real generous to her. Its neglected.....youll easily sink 10k plus in that car to make it decent then you may have a 6-8k car if youre lucky.
Who knows what you run into when you start drving it. |

If you got quoted 2k for a canvas top, you need a new canvas shop. That's WAY too high. I redid the seats in mine with alcantara and contrast stitching for under 400 bucks. If you pay someone to do everything, you can sink a ton into it. But paying people to do stuff isnt a project. |

For an 89? No way. Tires for my 92 were UNDER 400 bucks, and I have 275s all around (admittedly I wanted cheap tires for burnouts). You could put nice tires on that car for 600$ easily.

New leather seats on foam are a min of $1000 and on |

Maybe, but not $200 even if you did it.

I wish i could get a new top for under 1000 but no happening here. Or it would be shit. Tires too. I dont want junky tires. If im going to do it i want to do it right. Just looking for a fair offer. I dont want her to feel like im stealing it or strong arming her. Any and all advice or opinions are welcome

I wouldnt even consider it by nature of whose car it is. No good can come from it. You offer her 4000 under her perceived value, you're a cheap ass. You fix it up and you took advantage of her. If it has more issues than you go into, it's going to cause resentment. If you dont take care of it, you will never hear the end of it.
Just don't do it. Nothing about the car, but the WHOLE SITUATION is a bad idea. |
