Does your steering wheel/column have play/feels loose?
 

- While getting in and out of the car and holding the wheel
- While taking tight turns and holding the wheel tight

My wheel has side to side and diagonal play that moves perhaps 1/4” or less. I have never owned or driven any car that has had this. I did some googling and looks like a some owners said the same, some even said after checking multiple brand new corvettes at a showroom, they have this issue and chevy field tech said its normal.

Well it definitely does not feel natural while you have over a 1.1g lateral pull and the steering wheel moves.

I'm driving mine home from work in just a few minutes. I'll pay specific attention to this to see if anything feels different.

Although I am not an overweight person I have experienced a little play in steering wheels in some vehicles caused by using the steering wheel to pull myself up into the cabin such as in pickups that I have owned in the past. I don't do that anymore. May not be the problem with the looseness you are experiencing but will be if you continue to use the wheel to get into or out of the vehicle.

I drove my ZR1 again today and don't feel anything going wrong with the steering system.

yes, I have that issue with my zr1 and i am unhappy about it. I took it to the dealer and they said its normal. Thats not normal for this kind of car. i feel cheated

FYI i sat in 8 different corvettes in various dealers, ranging from stingray to gs to z06, every one except one did this. Doing more research on it, its pretty clear its due to the way steering shaft and telescope motor is assembled and most likely it is what it is. Fix requires the entire dash to be torn apart, extremely invasive fix and its one of those things they dont even know if it will fix it.

I’m pretty sure the folks commenting here arent taking turns hard enough or not pulling on it the same way i do or they simply dont notice. I get in and out of the car sideways to not to rub my butt on the seat bolsters and also to not scratch/scrape door sill and side skirt, this means getting some leverage from the steering wheel hence the issue.

It sounds like the OP is the only person who seems to have this 1/4" of play in the steering wheel. Can't imagine that it would too tough for a service dept to address this issue unless it is only in the mind of the owner.

Not buying it. There is no play in these car's steering, this dude is tripping need to change his meds!!!!!

My ZR1 steering wheel is girlfriend approved :smash: and very solid :thumbs:. My 2012 duramax wheel has about 1/8 of an inch of play when I pull myself in & I wight 195lbs..

So I figured out the problem. The steering column move up and down. I can reproduce it stationery, while the car is off. Hold the wheel from top and simply move it up and down. I recorded a video and will upload it.

Do you feel a pea hidden in the driver's seat under 20 layers of foam and 20 layers of leather?

I noticed the same type of play in my column today.

Gonna check my buddy's c7 out and see what his is like.

I first noticed it a couple months ago thinking something in the front end was kockong every now and then at low speed while make a minor correction in a parking lot for example. Going from straight the wheel has no torque applied then making a tiny movement left or right.

Today I figured out it is in all directions when you grab the wheel and pull and push like you are checking for a bad wheel bearing or ball joint.

I will take it to the dealer in next couple of weeks and report back

Some research found numerous others. And an invoice on how problem was corrected. Effects every type of C7 and repair should be same.

How much play did you have before the tilt motor was replaced? Did you have a chance to look at the replaced part how was it defective? Was there something broken in it or loose? I can't imagine that is was just worn...

My car has been at the shop for weeks now. Granted this wasnt the only thing it was in for but it was one of the big issues. Dealership has followed GM’s instructions, still no go. I’m very disappointed with how incompetent GM is. Dealership keeps asking GM what to do next now, and there is no answer.

GM is like the walmart of car companies. If you want the cheapest thing, go to GM, but if something goes wrong (and highly likely it will), expect a 0/10 customer service and resolution to your problems. Dealers are absolutely not at fault here. In the last 2 months, I have been in the trenches of this thing and learned how the dealer-aftersales-GM specialists-field engineers all work and I can tell you that they are such a big company with layers and layers of departments and people built on top of each other and good luck making progress if by some luck you have an issue that does not get fixed by the suggested methods.

I am at a loss of words as to how as a company they continue to screw up one thing after another. I have a very long blog that I am preparing that I will publish once there is closure in my situation.

To all of those people who did not believe me, my car has been at the dealer for 6 full weeks now. I was not making anything up and yes it is that bad and no GM is not taking the car back saying it doesnt matter how many weeks/months the fixes take and what drastic fixes are required, they will just keep fixing the car and if I’m not happy I can sue them in court.

And here is the funny thing. Even after 6 weeks, if by some miracle there was some tiny bit of hope that at least some of these issues (the real annoying ones) could be fixed, I would be happy but there isnt. I refuse to accept a sports car that has a loose steering column. Not a single car I tested this on, including Chevy’s other cars, have this problem. No this is not normal and it is absolute horseshit that people think this is not a big deal or it is by design. Show me a single other car that has this issue. I checked anything from subaru to bmw to even hyundai and none of them has even a mm of play but the $140,000 “america’s super car” does and apparently it cant be fixed!
