Under hood lights

It’s been a while since owning a C4. Noticed the under hood lights are staying on, is this the standard? I was thinking they are supposed to go off after a few minutes.

On my 94 - the lights stay on as long as the hood is open. You can pull the fuse in the forward engine compartment on the drivers side. Just follow the cable down, and you will see a connector with a latch. Open the connector and pull the fuse.

The hood lights are controlled by mercury switches and they stay on until the hood is lowered.

I followed the wire from each light and disconnected each fastener. Mission accomplished. I’ll only be showing this 23K miler Grand Sport and now won’t have to worry about battery drainage.

There are also kits to add a switch under the hood for those lights. I put one on my 86 and it's nice to be able to have the hood up and not have the lights on and not have to pull fuses etc. I think I got mine through CorvetteCentral and it was plug and play, no modifications to the car, just unhook a couple of connections and plug the harness in.

Agree with the others, put a switch in it.

Changing to LED bulbs will cut the current consumption also.

Another option is to swap festoon LED lights in place of the stock incandescent bulbs. More light, depending on which LED you buy, and NEVER having to worry about running the battery down.

I went with blue...just because they look good at cruise nights. But, white is also available. NOTE: Some such LEDs may require shaving a mm or two from one of the clips holding the LED bulb in place, However, others do exist requiring nothing - PLUG N PLAY. https://www.superbrightleds.com/cat/festoon/

With having 2 lights involved & bothhaving their own connector, would you have to buy 2 switches then? If I go that route? Love the idea with the LED’s..👍

I highly recommend the led conversion. Not just to save on the battery drain but to have REAL lights for a change.

This is in pitch black nighttime with no light other than the led under hood lights.

You guys are making this way too hard. Just add a little toggle switch to each light on the hot wire. I changed my bulbs to LED. I like to leave the hood up in the garage. I don't think I have turned the lights on in over a year. Dan

Just follow the wire and pull the connector apart. Cannot believe all the fuss about fuses and switches.

I installed a mini toggle switch near each light so I can turn them on or off at will they are still wired through the mercury switches, so if you close the hood they go off, but when it is up you can switch them on or off individually.

Years ago, I pulled the connectors for my underhood lights and haven't really needed them since. They don't provide enough light for any meaningful work, although I suppose that's not what they are intended for anyway... probably meant just for fluid checks, although the clutch master is seriously buried LOL.
