Broken exhaust manifold stud hole
The right side exhaust manifold (327/250) has a piece cracked off at the bottom. What's the thoughts between having a welder build it up and re-bore, vs. buying a replacement?

Weld and bore. Fairly standard repair.

If the welder is sufficiently talented, it can be very effective and almost as good as new.
The challenge is to get the new hole/stud parallel to the other two studs. If they aren't parallel it can be a bear to get the header pipe attached. Then you may find yourself having to screw the repaired stud into the manifold last to get it to fit. New reproduction manifolds are not that expensive. What is your goal for the car? A driver or a judged car? Good luck... GUSTO |
Used manifolds are cheap and plentiful.

If you can find someone to weld it properly is the question. I have an attachment that goes on an acetylene irg that works very well for gas welding cast iron. You use cast iron for filler so it produces a really nice weld. It's still not easy. Stick welding it with nickel always produces a crust between the parent metal and the filler because of the heat differential. This crust is extremely brittle and it may break there and the crust is very hard to machine and tap. I would just get another manifold.

It will be a driver so I don't have to keep the original. And since it's a 2" exhaust I suppose they are in less demand than the 2 1/2's.
Anybody out there got a good deal on a 3750556? |

My first thought as well. Probably cost half as much to buy a good used one as it would for the labor to fix the old one. At least in my area. Skilled labor is $$$ these days.
You can buy a repop for about $50 if you can't find one somebody will give you to get it out of their way. Should be plenty in the bone yards or or engine core shops. |
Mighty few boneyards have '70s or earlier cars or parts anymore.
They are called auto recyclers, now, and they don't have a back 40 full of old iron like the old days. Its damn hard to find original stamped steel 1960s SB covers without paying a fortune, anymore, they used to be free or almost free, everywhere. Doug |

You won't beat that deal.
|
Hey if I sandblasted it, and coated it for him, it would be a better deal, but I'm not going that far with this!! Lol
|
Looks like it also may come with free dead spider also!.
That is mighty generous of you. I give away old parts now and then, but always asked for shipping costs, as they have gotten quite stratospheric. Doug |
I think that's a crusty fish fly skeleton, they get really thick around here in late june.
This manifold has been sitting on a shelf for years, happy to get rid of it to a fellow Corvette brother in need of it. |
Rob, thank you very much, I'll accept! I'm more than happy to reimburse you for the shipping etc!
We just got back home, I will PM you later after cleaning our some room in my PM box! :hide: |
Gee, I don't know but I don't think you'll find a better deal than that.
Nice move, Rob. |
