Tint Question

This morning I got a few quotes for tint. 230, 299, 399, 499. That's from one installer, according to the tint chosen. He has done some C6's, and I asked because I have read that the rear window is difficult. He said you just have to have 2 guys on the install. What's a decent price, and what tint should I use?

I have been quoted about the same prices. I live in central Louisiana and most everything seems to be higher here then I have seen others get.

In DFW prices range from $200 to $300 for a strip and re-tint of all three windows. I would not entertain any pricing over $300. On my car I have 15% on the front windows and 5% on the back, all ceramic tint and I absolutely love it. I paid $230 plus taxes for removal of old tint and ceramic re-tint. I paid that with a smile on my face and took them my wife’s Caddy the next weekend.

Tint

Make sure to check laws in your state. NYS is now strict on tint, and you won't pass inspection if it's too dark.

I have 5% all around, in NYS. But I know a guy ;)
5% on side windows is great during the day, but way too dark for night driving. I open the windows when turning. It gives the cops something other than a moving violation to ticket you, so although it's $120 a ticket, it's saved me alot when pulled over for speeding.

I can't drive 55.

The rear window is a real pita to tint

I recently had my 2015 Cadillac CTS windows tinted. All the side windows and the back window. (The front had a factory tint strip across the top) Shop charged me $120 and then gave me a $20 discount for being a Veteran. 3M tint and a shade darker than the legal tint. Four guys working on the car knocked it out in less than an hour.

I met a fellow customer having his Vette tinted and it was the same $120.

I would not be so much concerned about cost as experience. Ask to see their book and at the Corvettes they have done. As stated, the he back window is a pita. My installer has been in business 15 years and did it three times because he is a perfectionist. I gave him a nice tip.

In Kansas, more than 35% of the light must be allowed in. Stupid question, but that is a 35?

That’s pretty cheap from what I’ve seen in DFW. About $400 is what I’ve received from places recommended by Corvette clubs (that’s to take off current tint & re-tint). The simplest/cheapest way to attack the top dot matrix is for the installer to use black vinyl over that area.

The 35 refers to the % of light transmitted. The prices you got quoted seem fair. I dont feel like theres a huge variety in tint quality, most shops use one product and use that for everything. I agree, experience and warranty matter more than materials.

Where are you in KS? If you are near KCMO I have a really good tint guy who does all of my cars.

Thanks, but I am in SWKS. The place I called did my tint 5 years ago as part of the deal when I bought my Camaro. They said that the dealerships always use the cheapest tint, and it lasted well and didn't scratch. I am looking at Sound Design in Garden City. They have a good reputation and do good work.

What brand tint was it?? There is a difference. I would say it isn't high quality if that is all you paid. You get what you pay for. If your tint starts to bubble and turn purple on you in a couple years, you will know. I wouldn't even entertain that price for ceramic. Especially having to pull old tint off. I sell Llumar which is probably best of the best.

Just had mine done with Suntek CXP 18% for $289 OTD. Used same guy that my other vehicles and PPF on one of them so I got a discount (so he said). Rear window turned out great. Of course it's cloudy and in the low 60s for the next couple of days so I'll need to wait 5 days to roll down windows as opposed to the normal 3 days.

Got a quote for $400 due to the back window being tough to do. Ended up going somewhere else and just doing door glass. Only $40. Works for me

Shelstin 04-14-2019 01:35 PM

What tint did you use on the door glass?

farmington 04-14-2019 02:18 PM

35%
after I got it done I thought I should have gone darker but now I’m glad that I didn’t.
In Michigan you can’t legally do tint, so needed to keep it subtle.

FiveVettes 04-14-2019 04:28 PM

Got mine done for 200, 35 on the windows and 18 on the hatch.

The lower the number the less light comes in.

Guyzer7 04-14-2019 05:08 PM

Just so you know this going into it, the dot matrix on the inside, upper part of the window does not allow the tint to lay flat as the dot spacing keeps the tint from laying flat against the glass. This is the biggest complaint with tinting the C6 rear window. I have read hear that some have used a Scotchbrite sponge or finer grit wet sandpaper to reduce(not eliminate) the thickness of the dots. Another method mentioned her is to lay a vinyl strip over the dot matrix before applying the tint. I have never see this done, but some are satisfied with the results. If I were to do it again, I would use the Scotchbrite pad or wet sandpaper with a block.

Don't cheap out here, get the best quality tint from the most experienced installer
