Old School - Anyone else do this
 

I don't know why I started doing this, but I have been marking the bottom of oil filters with the current mileage of the car when I change the oil. I have been doing that since my first oil change back when I was 13 or 14. I also put the information in the vehicle log, or some other indication of when (date and mileage) that the oil was changed.

This is a Mobil 1 oil filter that will be going on my 2004 Corvette when I change the oil tomorrow (or maybe today.).

What other "Old School" things do ya'll do?

I've kept a running log book for each of my cars in the glove box, since the 1960s.

I still double-clutch occasionally and give hand signals sometimes.

I have my high school graduation tassel hanging from the rear view mirror.

That I have never done, or even heard of, but admit that's a pretty elegant idea.

Yup, until recently with every fill up and mpg per tankful, per quarter, per year, and cumulative for the car. I use the old green Navy "Memorandum" pocket memo books we used to call "paper brains."

LOL, I have used hand signals in my '65 vert and been questioned by youngun's as to what I meant by them. I recall seeing them in the driver's ed book back in the day.

Anybody remember the hand signal for braking?

Straight down hand with the palm facing back. Did I win anything? I like the idea of writing the mileage on the filter, but I change the oil in my daily driver twice a year with synthetic oil and my old cars once a year or every other year. Jerry

If you were ever in charge of maintaining a lot of equipment you do it. Only difference is hours and date not miles for the equipement.

I have O/F data on all the filter carton lids and stickers since 1973. I also have Blue Dot tail lights. :D Dennis

I never let my oil get dirty on my toy....when it sits for long periods it gets dumped anyways. Oil is cheaper than a 13k engine.
on the DD I write the mileage on the top of the box I rip off that the oil filter came in (with the PN so I dont forget!)
Never kept logs, cant write it off so didnt feel there was any benefit...the next guy would throw it out anyways.

I think it's a good idea jv04. I usually write the date of install on parts like starters, alternators, fuel pumps, etc.

Same here. I guess I'm not the only one. Everything is recorded: gas, cost of gas, and oil changes, and any other work done on the car. Fun to see how much I paid for gas in the 60s !

I keep a log on all my vehicles; maintenance performed, date & mileage. I also have a small white board on the side of my garage beer fridge to track oil changes for each vehicle (I have 3). It has the vehicle, date and mileage of last oil change. This makes it visible to me at all times.

I've finally learned that those logs and boards hardly ever forget!

I use a manual choke, manual throttle cable, three on the tree, oil bath air cleaner and foot starter. No more than two pumps, not one, not three... Two..
When and where to use non detergent 30w oil..

I realized one day while moderately watching the preflight show how to unbuckle a seat belt buckle, most people have a push button release in modern vehicles now days and not everyone has airplane lift buckles like in the '65.

100 point NCRS deduct for writing on that oil filter. If it was done with a permanent marker, subtract another 75 points...

I still have a stack of oil change stickers that go on the door jam, and use them on all my vehicles and trucks.

Hand signals started disappearing as A/C became more common.

Tough to give hand signals with the window up.
