Found a hardtop for my C4.... should I buy it

Found a hardtop locally sort of, he is also a Boeing employee like me although he works down in Renton and I'm up in Everett.

He said the seals are in great shape, the pictures look good, and he wants $300 for it.

What do hardtops typically go for? It's red, and of course my car is black so would have to have it painted to match.

Pretty sure thats another good score, think those normally sell for around 1500

$300 is a steal, even if it has to be painted. Just be sure to get all the hardware that is necessary to mount it, some pieces are hard to find. FWIW, I paid $800 for a color matched top for my 89 with all the hardware ~7 years ago.

Be sure it has correct mounting hardware for your year car. I think it was late 87 or 86 they changed. At that price, if you have to, you can change it out yourself

When you say hardtop, are you talking about the complete hard top that goes on convertible or are you talking about targa top?

500-1500 depending on:

Weatherstripping condition, head liner, defrost option, GM or smoothline.

I had the smootline and GM version. Gm requires special brackets which can cost a tone too.

A gm will NOT bolt on to your car with out mods. 89+ from the factory came with them. You will have to do research. 86, 87,88, are convertibles but never meant for hardtops. Mods will have to be made to windshield frame I think and someone did it here years ago.

A smoothline WILL work. It will have pins on on the rear and screw clamps for the front.

I paid $1100 two years ago for a mint matching hardtop for my 89

jump on it; ain't like they're making any more of them

I actually decided to pass on it.

Upon closer inspection the roof had a split in in with pretty significant breakout.

I will hold off, I would rather pay more for one that doesn't need any fiberglass work.

Keep in mind the advise here, or you'll have a bill more than a break. Good luck on your search.

Did you see my last post that a stock one will not bolt to your car if it is older than '89?

The condition of the top is where the money is. The parts and options on it all cost a ton to fix and repair.

Yes I did... lol. Did you see my post which stated I decided to pass on it, I don't want to repair it, and I don't want to adapt it to fit my car.

I took the advice of the previous respondents and decided it was not worth the hassle even though the price was right.

That's why I didn't understand your post...… I already stated that I decided to pass on it. I appreciated the info.

Jared
