1990 zf driveshaft questions
 
Trying to figure out some driveshaft stuff as I might be in the market for a replacement. Been doing a bunch of googling and think I have learned that the drive shaft length is the same for 85 to 96, but the different transmissons all used different yokes. The zf yoke is a 2-3-13131x by Spicer but is no longer made and the u joints are spicer 5-3615x coated u joints.

Can anyone confirm this info or know an alternative fit yoke? Cant find the yoke anywhere. Did find a supposed alternative per the webpage but the yoke is 1/4 inch longer, is their wiggle room between the trans and diff for the extra length?

The 5-3615X is a 1350 series joint and 'incorrect' for the ZF drive-shaft. Is the drive-shaft intended for a C4 Corvette or is it maybe intended for something 'other than'? Many years ago I suggested a different slip-yoke and using a 1310/1330 conversion joint. The slip-yoke requires 30mm be trimmed from it.

Many have used it. Application for the drive-shaft I'd think very important!!

I used a TH400 yoke. It uses the 1310 u joint and will fit if you if you cut it to the correct length.

A drive-line shop told me using a TH400 with a ZF is much the same as a 100K mile used correct slip-yoke. They wouldn't build a drive shaft for a friend knowing it was for a ZF using a TH400 slip-yoke with any kind of warranty. Will other shops? Likely!

Mine has been working for over ten years now. It was recommended and installed by a shop (they only do drive shafts and differentials) that is well known in the local drag racing community. The correct yoke has not been not available new for many years. If you have a better solution please share it with us.

Its for a stock c4 l98 zf 6 speed. And if the 5-3615x is incorrect, then do you know what is?

A Spicer 2-3-10831X needs a 1310/1330 conversion joint and 30mm trimmed from it. Several here on the CF have used this and I'm quite sure Bill B has used it also. Would Bill use/suggest a TH400? I've no idea.

I 1st suggested this years ago and a search for the # would likely show a few. It corrected a balance issue for a fellow in Austria that I consider a very talented individual. This is his last comment regarding his install. He had a TH400 slip-yoke. He had a shaft built using a 1330 front with it and a 1310 rear @ the pinion.

Just ask the shop for a 1310 Spicer u-joint. Do you actually need a slip-yoke? How badly is yours worn. If not real bad I'd look into 'hard-chrome' plating that's used in industrial machine repair. I've never done it to a slip-yoke but if it were a wear of the outer finish I'd consider it.

Bought the car non-operating, knew it needed distributor cap and rotor along with a starter. Turns out it also needs a driveshaft as it is missing. I am supposed to go up tommrow and he says he knows where it is but based off our interactions i am not holding my breathe. If I cant get the driveshaft tommrow then i will nees to source a replacement. Was looking into just putting one together from an ebay shaft sin ujoints and yoke but am now leaning toward the dorman 936-290, which is listed by dorman as a drop in replacement, due to my lack of certainty in finding a yoke and proper fittings for any significant amount less.

There's much about that Dorman that 'hints' NO FIT - Unless it was local where I could put hands on before buying I (myself) wouldn't touch it. Where are you located?

The issue with that I expect is it's got the major/minor spline diameters same as the TH400. Everyone else that sells that mentions only TH400, 4L80 etc. No one other than Dennys mentions ZF. There is a difference.

OP - I spotted another thread you started mentioning the cap, rotor etc also missing. Now the drive-shaft seems to be maybe missing. I'd suggest you 'gather your thoughts' and confirm much more regarding car condition before you spend 1¢ more. There's much you need to do before being concerned I'd think with a drive-shaft.

ZF doc sells a heavy duty bushing for the tail shaft housing; its longer than the oem piece and provides more bearing surface and stabilizes the yoke better.

Had a friend go over the car with me he agrees that it looks like, other then the missing pieces, the car is in good condition. Essentially what happened is the PO had the clutch/slave replaced then his mechanic got arrested and sent to jail. Picked up the car as is for under 2k. He texted me this afternoon that he has found the drive shaft and is supposed to run it over to me tomorrow.
