i have a thread on this car where it ran really HOT and i think it had been for quite a while. it does not appear to have affected any metrics on the engine but wow i see the effects here. the engine just has a burnt tinge to it.
when i compare to a low mile 85 that i did, this just appears burnt. i wasnt the first guy to do the oil pan, and the reason it was leaking is because of the corrossion at the fromt seal that bubba did not take car of. he simple put the grey rubber engintech gasket overtop of it. so off i go to get myself some scotch pads. i will wear the corrosion down and use either hylomar or a light rtv skim to instal the new engine tech set i bought. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...499c4016ae.jpg i wipeed the bottom of that splash tray off with carb cleaner. making it look burnt but it was more covered in a real light skim of sludgy smelling oil. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...56060de760.jpg engine tech https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...5ed97e7206.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...4eda89509b.jpg all cleaned up and backblowed. |

yeah this car was a basketcase. absolute basketcase. when i did the first oilchange it realllly stunk. ive never smelled oil like that. i went through 4 or 5 oil changes with high detergent oil and it is better now other than these chunks. do the bearings go because chunks block the oil passages in the bearing caps or because the pump just cant get the oil it needs when chunks block the intake like this? |

There is a lot of wear in that pump, you can tell by the scoring/wear marks on the cover where the gears have been spinning, be no surprise to find other areas such as the camshaft, big end and main bearings etc have suffered also. I would be removing some bearing caps to see what state they are in JMPO.

ok. i would have to do it from under the car. which i dont mind doing but i guess the question is what i am i going to do about it?
scuff and new bearing caps? ive never done anything like that but i could handle it. replace with stock size? and add new replacement pump? |
You can do bearings in the car, rods and mains. Measure or look at the backs for sizing. Are the journals ok?
The pics look bad, but how does the pump cover feel? Are those score marks, or is it just really unfortunate looking polishing? Is it flat? If you put a straight edge on it, is it scored? |

im more than will to put new caps on as i was planning on this car making it through at least a few sessions of hpde on a road track. |

You should probably just replace it and check bearings..
People here will blanch at this, I know.. But if you wanted to, the old timers used to blueprint oil pumps by flat lapping them into spec.. Gears and housing. There is a specification for oil pump clearance. Or, at least there used to be. |
confab i did my head gasket on an 85 by decking by getting a scrap piece granite countertop and gluing sand paper to it and sanding them back and forth for 10min. worked perfectly and i was done in a couple hours.
i googled it and im going to do the same thing here just to smooth it out a tad. furthermore, im going to use hylomar between the plate and the block as a gasket. im not checking the bearings. oilpressure on the car is perfectly fine, 20-30 when reeaallyy hot at idle with 5w30. This engine had the unfortunate experience of being massively heatsoaked for a pretty long period of time id say. when i picked up the Skunk (stripe down the middle) its cat was clogged and it took me a while to figure it out and the oil was commonly 270f my guess is previous owners were not running mobil1 synthetic!!! anyway ive cleaned it up and im absolutely impressed with the sbc resilience! |

fair enough and oh well. i paid $650 for the car, any excuse for an ls swap. lets see how far she makes it.

Your call but I would like to have seen how much bearing material is left on the mains and big end bearings before you button it up, replacing the bearings at this point if the crank is not too bad could extend the life of the engine considerably. From what you have found so far I would say the PO was "allergic" to doing oil changes! Reminds me of an ex sister in law who proclaimed that the car she had at the time went better when the little red light on the dash was flashing (OP light, oil not showing on the dipstick).
