Legal top speed in the United States or Canada

I was curious about the top legal speed in the U.S.and Canada. In Alaska I think it is 60.

85 in some parts of texas is the highest I’ve seen. Heard tales of roads in Montana so far from anything that nothing is enforced.

There are parts of Alaska where 65 mph is legal, I have driven on them. Back in the 90's I drove through Montana when it had no speed limit, that was fun.

I was just in WY and long stretches of I-80 are 80 MPH. Most are 75.

That being said, everyone was flying 90-95 anyways. Funny to see a soccer mom in a mini van going that fast. :-)

Majority of highway in Canada are 100km or 60mph

In the 80’s I used to go visit my uncle in Montana and it was unlimited during the day and you could have an open container.

The reason there's a black dot where Washington DC is, because it's hard to reach any speed limit in bumper to bumper traffic :D

speed4tu 04-18-2019 09:24 AM

These limits need to be re evaluated. Far too slow for todays cars.

And far too fast for the average driver with their phone in one hand and a 64 oz soda in the other.

Let's not upset the apple cart

Doubtful that will ever happen, Texas has the highest speeds in the country and also one of the highest deaths with car accidents. I have lived in NY, FL and TX, people just want to go fast out here. I mean I am not complaining but they can definitely use some time on the road course to be better drivers.

The speed limit on BC highways is now 120 km/h (74mph) and there are a few other provinces with 110 km/h limits. Ontario is stuck with the stupid 100 km/h limit but everyone goes 120 and cops won't even pull you over at that speed.

BC now has variable speed limits on a couple of the interior highways based on road conditions, 120 is the norm (most cruise at 130 -140) but in bad weather they can drop it down to 80.

Perhaps so, but the highways I drive around here are so terrible that the car would disintegrate from all the pot hole and disappear if you hit one of the tank traps!

Only roads around here that are decent shape are the toll roads - which are now the most expensive in the country and in decent shape only because no one can afford to use them!

Oh, and you best watch out of the construction truck that dumps their step ladder right in the middle of multiple lanes!

I can’t drive 55

Freeways in Oregon: 65mph. Everything else is 55 Unless posted lower.

mschuyler 04-18-2019 01:37 PM

There is a stretch of highway in west Texas posted 90 mph.

acroy 04-18-2019 01:48 PM

I went on the 85mph portion outside Austin just last week, coming home from vaca. Nice road. BTW, my 1-ton 12 passenger family van has no problem holding 93mph cruise :smash:

In order for that to be relevant, you'll need to show that those deaths are occurring in the tiny sliver of 85 MPH shown in the graphic. If it happens in other places then your claim here doesn't mean shit. Even if that were the case you'd also need to show that the accidents are a result of the faster speed. Correlation does not equal causation.

People all over the country just want to go fast to get to their destinations quickly. This is not limited to those states as is your observation that people need more driver training in those states.

How does it handle a burst-tire at 93mph?

mtaxman 04-18-2019 04:22 PM

I had a Skip Barber instructor take a loaded with students 15 passenger ford van around a road course track to "show us the line"...boy could that guy could drive. But I wouldn't want to be in anything that size at speed that blew a tire.

Hell, I got this up to 85 legally on that toll road south of Austin leaving COTA. I didn't stay there long because you sure as hell don't want a front tire blowout in this.
