riveting Velcro pads
 

Sooo, I noticed that one of the reasons (a major one) that my door panels did not conform well to the door is that the wrong "Velcro pads" are riveted on there - also in a bubba way.

Are there any tips for riveting the correct ones on? Is the door panel designed to take them ?

It looks you have an old reproduction door panel. The original Velcro pads have two posts that you would need to drill holes for then you'll probably need some glue to hold them in place.

I have done that project once. Not too bad.

I probably have enough Velcro pads to do one door if you're interested.

Yep. That worked. Rivets and glue. Inside panel is quite rigid.

This has led me to discovering another problem, the door panel seems the be warped and even with the Velcro pads, it won’t stay against the door.

Im thinking I might have to make a few notches in the plastic to bend it back.

I have some pretty good experience with heating up the door cards as well as the same type of vinyl for the headliner on my removable hardtop. I tried my wife’s old hair dry without much luck on the headliner. After getting some information from Ernie at Willcox. I found a new plastic looking product at HD. 3M makes it and is on a roll and almost the same at the pads
used on our cars. Both pieces have very strong stickum on their backs. I cut two pieces to the length needed and use some clamps with rubber pads to pursued the vinyl closer to the the fiberglass hardtop. Next I purchased Wagner Heat gun and set the temp for the lowest setting. I began heating up the vinyl MOVING the gun all the time, and slowly tightening the clamps. Just as Ernie said, after the vinyl cooled off, some of the stickum on the Velcro came off, so it mixed up some epoxy. Once the epoxy dried, I started the heat gun / cramping procedure once again. It really turned out quite good. I left the clamps on for a day to make sure the vinyl stay were I wanted it to be. Also the clamps make indentions on the vinyl, and went back over the with the heat gun. I also used the same procedure for the door cards, just go slow and remover the Vic’s very old.

Hmmm - I am thinking about "notching" the ABS. My sense is that the ABS is very rigid. I think taking some of that out would go a long way. I have never seen door cars as rigid as these. Maybe drilling a series of 1/2 inch holes.

I actually threw the door panel I changed the Velcro on away because it was clearly an old not so high quality reproduction and so far off at the bottom of the door.

I might have to do the same... I am not very pleased with these...
