Body mount rubber bushings replacement
 

Just got my 1978 inspected and the station informed me that the rubber bushings were about toast. I have know this since I first purchased the car, but too much other work had

to be done. The mechanic is not experienced in this for Corvettes. With the amount of rust under the car there is concern on how to get the bolts loose to repair

with new bushings. He is concerned about using heat if needed because he fiberglass body. Has anyone done this recently and any information on what I'll be

facing to get new bushings on.

Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Which bushings? Can you post some photos?

I'm struggling to think where you could apply on a bushing that is near the fiberglass body. Most of the time (with the exception of the trailing arm bushing, which you cut out), you can unbolt the part first.

EDIT: Body Mounts! I should slow down and read the title.

Does your mechanic have a way to support some of the weight of the body off of the chassis?

I believe the OP is talking about body mounts.

The mount that's just in front of the rear wheels, the one with the funky "caged nut", I believe it's the #3 mount, can be a real MOFO to get undone. I replaced the body mounts on my wife's former '79 C-3, back in the mid 90s. That particular mount, on both sides, was a real PITA, but the others weren't too bad, at least because they were more accessible. FWIW, I replaced the mounts with Energy Suspension polyurethane mounts.

What does "toast" mean? Are they just ugly looking....outside cracking & old brittle surface? Or are they actually deteriorating and losing enough material that the 'position' of things has significantly changed? If they just look 'nasty', keep driving it. Swapping out body mounts is no small task. And once you start down that "Primrose Lane", MANY other "old" conditions will raise their ugly heads and get you all in a tither. Don't go to all that trouble if significant issues aren't apparent, now. Just my opinion....
