5v connection in C5

Hi. i m sure someone can help, I have a dash cam in my C5, works great off the cig socket adaptor, but i decided i didn t want that as it is always powered on and i forget to unplug it. I wacked the adaptor off and hard wire into fuse# 22 in the kick panel, it is powered with on / off ignition, the ground wire is secure, there is power to the camera, my thing is, it will power on then go off in 3 seconds, have formatted the card, have done a hard reset. The only thing i can think of is it is not getting enough power, and it requires 5 volts, so now i am trying to find 5 volt outlet or along that line to connect to. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The way you have it wired now, it's getting 12 volts.

Yes. How do I get it down to 5 volts or do I just stick the plug back on it and live with that crap.

If your camera needs 5v you can't just get rid of its power adapter and connect it directly to a 12v source.

You already have an adapter that takes 12v from the cigarette lighter socket and converts it to 5v to feed the camera (the one you were successfully using before). At first I thought you took that adapter and hardwired it to a switched source, but it seems you completely took the converting adapter out of the equation and fed 12v to the camera

What you can do, to keep things neat and reversible, is get one of those adapters that have a short cable with a cigarette lighter socket in one end and alligator clamps, or whatever else, in the other end. Cut the alligator clamps and hardwire the adapter to a switched source in the passenger fuse box and then connect the camera's adapter to it. Bring the 5v output from the camera's adapter to the dash cam, conceal everything and you should be good
