tell me how you data log without spending 5k.
I want to start data logging when I track my car. I have looked at Racelogic. It seems like a very nice system. But I think Id like to try to data log with video record and engine data overlay at a lower cost. I'm not a tech guy to a high level. But I can understand if you coach me.
Thanks Roger. |
before I purchased my AIM MXG dash i used...
any phone, gopro, racechrono app and a external GPS, see video below https://www.dropbox.com/s/ms77ol4rp6..._1444.mp4?dl=0 |

Thanks Roger. If you're trying to develop a chassis then you'll want channels for all kinds of stuff....steering wheel pos, yaw, shock pots, maybe tire temps....if you're working an engine program you'll want every bit of engine data you can get. What's your budget? I think if you'll tightly define what you're trying to accomplish it'll be easier to figure out what you want. If you have not honed down your priorities it might be a good time to. Typically I've seen the most accomplished folks 1. Make care very reliable so they don't miss a single lap of a single session 2. Work on their driving and get it absolutely top shelf. 2a. when the local fast guy can slip in your car to set a 'data lap' for you and your time is ultra close to his, then it is time to spend money on the car 3. Make car faster I see a lot of folks trying to develop their driving skills but they constantly are changing the car while they are trying to hone their skills and it just makes getting that next skill set even harder. My .02 anyway... Costas cars and such... |
You can get very good data logging for a lot less than 5K. Race Logic is indeed nice and their software is really good at integrating video into the data analysis but it comes at high cost. As mentioned above, AiM Solo for $400 will give you very good data to analyze your performance as a driver - it just won't have the car's data (i.e. no RPM, TPS, Oil Pressure, Temp, etc). You have to step up to AiM Solo DL ($700) to get the car data. Another advantage of any AiM system is its popularity - lots of people use them and hence lots of data is available to compare with (all AiM systems use the same data format and analysis software). There are several AiM facebook groups that support the community as well.
These are far better than an app on your smart phone but if you only want to dabble in data logging and get some decent video - a smartphone app costs practically nothing in comparison. |
Thanks for the input. My initial goal is to improve myself. But having speed info will help me learn the best turn in speed and braking ppoints. But the latter is less important at this point.
I dont plan on making any car mods other than brake upgrade. Thanks |
If you're trying to develop the driver, a plain AIM SOLO is tough to beat and it is under 1/10th the listed 5k. It provides a ton of data and once you know how to use it (find a good user to teach you, get ready to spend some time in from of YouTube, etc) you can quickly look at speed and G charts on your laps. If you have a hotshoe you trust set a datalap for you that quickly gives you something to shoot for.
Just my .02 tho, Costas cars and such... |
For driver improvement take a look at the Apex system:
