Crotch rocket wanted to race

Leaving my new job at around 2am, I find the freeway I use to go home is closed for construction, so have to take another.

Getting on it I'm cruising along about 70 mph and this crotch rocket guy keeps hovering next to me, he is in fast lane, one lane to my left, but behind me where he is in my blind spot.

Kept gearing down and revving engine, I wasn't going to race, besides there were cars ahead of us, even if it was clear, no thanks.

I guess he didn't get the hint as he did this non stop for about 30 seconds, then gave the bike all it had, my windows were down, and man the exhaust was loud.

So, I guess what that means, is a 20 year old C5 vert still looks fast. Lol

Logic tells me a bike like that would win anyways, right?

ShagVette 05-11-2019 02:21 PM

Yes, most bikes are faster.

run1fsr 05-11-2019 02:31 PM

He'd have smoked you.

How do you know? He didn't say what kinda bike it was.

If it was a dinky 125, 250, or even most 650 twins, the Vette would spank it.

It could have been a Honda 50 ♫♫ First gear, its all right, 2nd gear I leaned right, 3rd gear hang on tight.... Faster .. its all right ♫♫

My Vette puts down 623 & would get raped by any of the fast crotch rockets & so would my Hellcat.

1999corvettels1 05-11-2019 03:39 PM

I don't know what brand or model, don't think I noticed color, just a crotch rocket.

Not worth it to me to see if C5 is fast enough to keep up, ticket, license suspension, etc.

flyingmfrc 05-11-2019 03:52 PM

I have both, and I can tell you that my C5 is no match for my Honda CBR1000rr. You made the right choice for several reasons. Both have their place and I like both for different reasons. I can tell you, if you have never ridden a litre Sport Bike you don't really know what power to weight ratio really is.https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...e93731d522.jpg

Only moderately fast bikes 350hpish C5 would stay with would probably be late 90's, early 2000's 600's with inexperienced/ bad riders. Or maybe like a 600 naked.

I said all that to say this, I do not condone street racing. However I have taken a newer fz6 naked with a 350hp E46 M3 and a Harley nightrod with a 400hp E92 M3 both from rolls - both bikes capable of running very high 11's low 12's stock. Cars run low average 13's. From a dead stop, a car weighs it's full 3000+ lbs. But at 70mph, a car weighs only half that in rolling/ drag resistance, and STILL has it's 400hp. Couldn't catch me trying that from a dig, or a roll vs a 750, RSV4, 1000RR, or a newer 600 for that matter.

My point here:

You'd spank 600s. 1000s, not so much.

pretty much, a mildly modded or even heads/cam c5 will get easily walked by most 600s but a 600+hp boosted c5 starts to get competitive... around 8-850 you can start pulling away from 1000s but once the bikes start to mod then you have to mod accordingly lol

Heads cam C5 would give the 600 a proper run on the highway. I'm just guessing here but I'd say above 90mph the Vette starts gaining. Roll racing favors the cars in my experience, aerodynamics being what they are...

Hey Mack- I am sorta surprised you couldn't keep up with the guy in the lounge chair???? I assume that was you on the bike??? I don't think that would have happened with a Litre Bike, unless that video was well over 150 mph.

At any rate, if that was you on the bike, I'd like to recommend more riding gear. I know you are young and indestructible, but a t-shirt, jeans and tennis shoes are no match for asphalt. I'm not telling you what to do, just trying to save you some serious skin grafts or even death. I always figure the riders with little to no protective gear have never had a serious accident yet. If it wasn't you on the bike...never mind...:)

yes especially a bike more than 1000 cc he would have smoked you
very true, indeed

Sorry sir, not my video. I don't roll with inline-4's. I would in the next European country by the time that car got up to speed.

600cc sport bikes run mid 10s.

flyingmfrc 05-11-2019 09:31 PM

Hey Mack- Wew...good news, it wasn't you!!! I'm sure you are wearing protective gear too. Maybe you are sporting a V4.....that will get the job done too.....

Yes sir! If I could do it all over again, I would've went RSV4 from the get go. The RC8R was a blast too. No real horsepower like the 4's up towards 10,000+, but no need to rev to go fast. Brain numbing roll-on torque.

These days, I don't own any more bikes, but ride my fathers road king to clear my mind sometimes.

Vetteman Jack 05-12-2019 12:01 AM

Very good decision not to get suckered into a street race. Just not worth the potential for trouble.

Sometimes the experience can be good. Just this week was on the local rural highway twisties and a bike was behind me. We carved through the turns pretty much together but not at any indecent speed. When I turned off for my neighborhood, I got the friendly beep and wave as he passed by.

Had a similar deal at a stop light with a bike behind on that same road. Light green, we both took off, and got up to speed and let off. At the next light he pulled up alongside and asked if it was a stock exhaust since it sounded ****** awesome (which it is).

So it all depends on the motivation of the participants. Always nice to have a little harmless fun - just don't let it get out of hand. That being said, I'd never race a bike - that's pretty much pointless.
